Beating Agathoth - Imperial Guard Background
Hi Team AoD!

I just completed my first play through with the Imperial Guard background. I was able to beat Agathoth without using the medical canister but I had to use a lot of cheese tactics. Essentially, I took all the remaining skill points I had left, put them into alchemy, crafted as many bombs and liquid fire vials as I could and then bombed Agathoth down before landing a few lucky strikes to finish the job.

But when I tried to solo him melee he absolutely wiped the floor with me. Here are my end game stats:

Axe 10
Block 10
Critical Strike 7
Lore 8 (for Ra mode on the PA)

Attack 168
Defense 182

Imperial Power Armor
Pendulum of Judgement

With this setup doe anyone think it is possible to beat Agathoth?

Lastly, I was looking for more bolas but could find only 2 stocked on the merchant next to the arena on Maadoran. Any place I could pick up a few more? I wish merchants would re-stock some select expendables as we unlock new cities in the game. Would also be great if we could have at least one potion vendor for a handful of high end potions, for those of us that skip alchemy.

Killing him in melee is possible but you'll need high level potions (since he's a god, even if weakened from the cryosleep) and you're only human. Neurostimulant (the eagle eye one) will increase both your AP and THC. Berserker potion will greatly increase damage but give you a THC penalty (which the neurostimulant can cancel out), so you'll have more AP and do a lot more damage. I've seen people killing Agathoth in 2 turns this way:

When fighing Agathoth (this was a while ago now) the only way I could reliably beat him in melee was using the spear to create a distance where he would come in and get pushed back over and over. I don't know how well going toe to toe with him would really work.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

The only way to reliably beat him as imperial guard(or any character) seems to be alchemy. I'm stuck with him as well even though I have 10/10 in combat skills already :/

Also in the video above, the non-weakened agathoth defense is only -55% yet in the game currently(at least mine) he has a whopping -177% defense lol. Beating him by malee is almost impossible at the current state now.

Yeah. I double checked too. These videos were produced with a severely underpowered version of this boss fight. Also, regarding alchemy - that does not leave a lot of points to spread around for a melee character. Especially if you're going for 8 Lore to snag Ra mode on the Power Armor.

Yeah they probably buffed the boss fight after those videos considering those videos are from 2016 lol. -177% defense on non-weakened version basically forces you to go for other endings or use fire/bombs for a pure melee character, despite how good your skill level is.

Another issue is crafting really under performs in comparison. For pure melee character, you'd think either crafting or alchemy could be used to help tough fight but the reality is alchemy outperform crafting by a large margin. Especially in this fight, having top tier equipment and armor don't do anything since the boss has such absurdly high CS chance.

The god was never meant to be easily killable. That's why the option to kneel is there, not for pure role-playing reasons but because for most people, even good warriors, the awakening god would be too strong (as it should be) so the real choice would be to serve him or leave the sarcophagus undisturbed and walk away.

I completely get that Vince! With some bolas, Power Armor and a boatload of top tier alchemy, a melee character should be able to take the boss without having to resort to the medical canister.

Plus, looking at the medical canister, I appreciate how you and your team made sure any character can obtain it - irrespective of stat or skill setup.

So I have a mechanics question about this encounter. I am trying to target Agathoth's arms to bring down his THC but it seems to have no noticeable impact on his ability to hit me. Is he immune to the debuffs of aimed strikes?

Any insight here from anyone?

Any chance to get a developer answer on this?

Sorry, I simply don't remember and don't have time to dive into the scripts. Non-human characters do have some immunities, so some attacks that work well against humans are less effective or not effective at all against non-human enemies.

As an IG, I was able to kill Agatoth in melee without weakening him first, but that was after *alot* of retries. Basically, I needed everything to go perfectly.

1st round :
Drink Elixir +5 AP, +25 THC
critical Power Attack followed by critical Aimed:Arms (helps alot to survive Agatoth's turn)
All in all, about 10% chances to score those 2 crits.

Agatoth's turn :
Hope for an attack of opportunity (1 chance out of 3 ?).
The fact that he's debuffed with -40 to THC makes it relatively likely to survive this turn.

2nd round :
He should only have 40 or so HP by then, so one crit Cleave and he's done.

str 9, dex 9, con 6
Axe 9 (158)
Hammer 4 (just for the 9 synergy with axes)
Dodge 8 (113)
Crit 10 (199)

This was my first playthrough, so the build is certainly far from optimal.

Final though : What a great game!, congrats to the developers, you did an awesome job. I'll certainly buy Colony Ship and wish you the best.
