DOOM II

Broken Game
I just bought with gift card money, and Im really pissed that I wasted my money. Every time it gets to the title screen, the game freezes, I have tried running in Compatibility mode, but that doesn't work either. For some reason, I cant open the .CONF files. Any other way to fix? If not, I want my money back.

odamex, zdaemon or glboom are all good alterntives to playing doom / doom2. Install those, then locate/copy doom2.wad in your steam folder and you're done

Chocolat doom and pr/glboom for the original feeling, odamex zdaemon and zandronum to play online, zdoom and gzdoom for everything else.

May I ask how?
Use the Source Ports of Doom to work properly. There are very good ports out there on the interwebz: GZDoom, ZDoom, Skulltag, Doomsday, Risen3d and others! Don't bother using the Dos Version of the Game. These Ports can enhance the gameplay better than the original.

Run it in compatibility mode for Windows 95

Then you have to edit both the doom2.cfg and Doom2m.cfg files to change this:

fullscreen=false

Then look down a little further and change this:

waitonerror=false

Now find Dosbox.cfg and change waitonerror to false as well.

BOTH files have these settings and BOTH files must be changed AND be the same.

If those dont work do this too:

fulldouble=false

in both doom2.cfg and doom2m.cfg.

Now when the game starts, to use fullscreen just hit Alt+Enter.

This is only for Doom II. I have not yet messed around with any other flavors of Doom on W8.

Enjoy!

I would still recommend using a source port. They enhance the graphics and controls, and allow you to play online. And you can even play Brutal Doom with Zandronum, which is a truly spectacular mod that I feel any old-school FPS should at least try out(and it has online co-op as well). Zdaemon has a pretty decent competitive scene for CTF and TDM, if you're interested in that.

If you do want to go online, you need to download IDE(Internet Doom Explorer).
