DOOM II

DOOM II

Best level packs/wads?
What are the best wads that add new levels to the game?
I don't want anything that changes how the game plays or any total conversions, just new levels.

Thanks :happymeat:

I can recommend pretty much all the ones I play. A list would be too long so I print screened my ones for Doom. Google them followed by Doom wad or something and you will find them:

My personal favourites are Back to Saturn X 1 and 2, Scythe 2, Going Down, Doom 1 & 2 In Name Only, Epic 2, Community Chest 4, Hell Revealed 1 & 2, Icarus 1, Perdition's Gate, Resurgence, New Doom Community Project 2 and Alien Vendetta. That list should keep you busy for god knows how long.

Bear in mind a lot of wads post 2000's usually need some kind of sourceport to play, usually Zdoom.

I have uploaded a few gameplay videos of me playing these Megawads. Ignore the gameplay mods I am using if you're not into that, I play a level or 2 of a few level packs:

Valiant is pretty good stuff: five episodes, each with a distinct theme; really gorgeous detailed maps; extremely varied gameplay that goes from classic to large adventurey maps to slaughtermaps (not slaughtermaps of overwhelmingly frustrating variety mind you) within a single episode. Definite must play, feel free to add it to baddude's list of must plays (also, Hellbound is pretty damn good, easily my favourite recent megawad)

Aaaah yes! I forgot about Hellbound. that one's great. Best city environments for Doom the first episode of that. I did actually give Valiant RC 2 a download earlier, but as someone who mainly uses gameplay mods the visual changes lack of support for said gameplay mods put me off a bit.
Thanks a lot guys :happymeat:

Add Jenesis to the list of must play ;) .
I'm playing through the New Doom Community Project, it's pretty great so far.
Even better with the brutal Doom mod on.

I have an awful Doom addiction! Hope you enjoy. I know a lot of people like vanilla Doom, but the gameplay mods and level packs make it for me.

I love vanilla Doom but mods like Brutal Doom make it feel like a new game. The gameplay is as fast and responsive as it's ever been.
I'd rather play Doom again over a lot of modern shooters like Medal of honour and COD.

Weapon X is probably my favourite modern gameplay style Doom mod. It has a load of guns and less of the excessive gore of Brutal Doom. I have a few videos of mods I have played on Youtube if you're interested:

I also made myself a little Brutal Doom Mech mod as my stress reliever style. The Brutal Doom gore is very satisfying when you're a nigh invulnerable walking tank:

And here's the playlist I mentioned earlier of a few other mod's I can recommend:

Huh, I think I'll check out Weapon X. Did you play Trailblazer? That's probably the best mod I played until now, probably the only downside I can think of is that it's a bit overpowered.

Yeah I've played it a bit. It's pretty fun but as you said over powered (but most gameplay mods are, due to maps being balanced for vanilla) and when your health is low I feel you move too fast which puts me off a bit. The same person made one called Guncaster that is great fun. It has a full on XP/money RPG system to buy upgrades and use spells as well as weapons. Check it out. Demonsteele is another good one, with a melee focus due to the katana.

I do highly recommend Weapon X though. There are literally dozens of weapons including thinks like quad shotguns and hell-style plasma assault rifles. The slightly altered enemies are refreshing too, but if you don't like them there is a version without the new monsters.

Yup, Demonsteele is indeed hell-a-fun, kind of reminds me of the new Shadow Warrior, but a lot faster and more anime, I guess would be a good description.
I've seen Guncaster but I thought it was just for HeXen and Heretic and I don't own those yet, but I just checked and it does work with Doom, I'll have to give it a go.
I tried Weapon X and it truly is awesome, thanks for the tip there, I'm going to grab a random wad and playthrough it with it.

I'm doing a playthrough of Back to Saturn X 1 and 2 with it. Currently halfway through it, IMO it is the perfect fit for Weapon X.

Thanks for the tip, going to do it!
Also, just played Guncaster, it is a blast, thanks for recommending it!
