oh interesting, not to mention the super shotgun, a big great add to the game
For example, I can play Guncaster in Doom 1, 2 and Final, but the Hell Revelaed mapset is only for Doom 2.
DOOM1 and DOOM2 store all their game data in what is called a IWAD file. This file is divided in to lumps for levels, music, monsters, sprites etc. When the engine starts, it loads data from the lumps in this file to start the game. Now mods are stored in a PWAD file which is short for Patch WAD. The lumps inside the PWAD will replace their counterparts in IWAD, when the engine merges the PWAD and the IWAD together. So if you make a pwad with a level called MAP01, that map will override the existing MAP01 level in DOOM2.
This brings me to my next point. DOOM1 and DOOM2 list the levels in the lump data differently. Because of the episode nature of DOOM1, levels are named by episode and map number. A classic example is the first level: E1M1. The same could be said for the first level of Episode 2: E2M1.
DOOM2 doesn't use episodes. Instead it lists levels as maps. This means the first level is called MAP01, the second is MAP02.
Because of the different naming conventions, maps designed to work in DOOM1 will not work with DOOM2. There are however, other kinds of PWADS that can work with both DOOM1 and DOOM. An outstanding example is Brutal Doom.
