DOOM II

DOOM II

Why do people hate TNT Evilution so much?
Might be a controversial opinion but TNT is my favorite of the original DooM releases. I prefer it over Plutonia and DooM II even. Apart from map 6 and also Habitat, they suck and I get stuck on them every time, but all other games have even more levels that I really hate.

Levels are weird
I think the controversy stems from how the level set came to be.

Originally, TNT: Evilution was going to be a free, fan-made mapset, one of the first true "megaWADs" of the DooM modding scene.

However, id Software decided to approach Team TNT and gave them an offer to let id publish the .WAD and make it a commercial release that would have to be paid for.

As a result, TNT: Evilution and Team TNT drew quite a bit of ire, being considered sellouts for letting id monetize their work.

Interesting how The Plutonia Experiment largely avoided the same kind of controversy despite being included in Final DooM all the same.

Oh yeah I forgot about all the outrage back then, but nobody talks about that nowdays. Everyone complains of how the levels look bad or play bad which I don't think is the case at all.
if you like massive maps with only ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ zombie men and imps then tnt is for you

Honestly way preferrable than the revenant-pain elemental-archvile ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of Plutonia.
It's because most maps are successions of long corridors full of... not a lot of things actually and giant rooms full of hitscanners in a tech-base setting. As far as I know, those levels were supposed to mimic realistic environnements and buildings but it leads to levels lacking variety with some confusing level design. Obviously, some levels are great but there are too few of them.

Oh? Someone hates TNT? I understand when Plutonia is badmouthed because of it's general ugliness and intended painful difficulty. But TNT is completely on par with the original DOOM II episode.

Because the level design isn't that good.

Honestly I feel that some levels are good, and some are bad, but the biggest problem with tnt for me is that most of the levels are just so boring. I feel like half of tnt evolutions levels are just boring cavern maps. There too linear, and give the player no room for real exploration.

I still remember that level where you have to go back to the beginning after getting one key.

Honestly I feel like alot of the maps were that way. You do a lot of backtracking in TNT as well. All I can say is TNT Evilution isn't as bad as a lot of Youtubers, or other people on steam say it is, but there are so many bad, and boring levels that its almost not worth getting to the good levels in TNT.

I think Mill is the reason why I don't want to redo a run of TNT right now.

What I dread when playing TNT Evilution is playing through Administration Center, and Mount Pain. Those are some of my least favorite maps.

Admin Center didn't bother me too much because I loved the lore implication of that level with the text right before (Doomguy literally hated that level, almost more than hell itself because it's why he was on Phobos to begin with).

Mount Pain (which I nickname mount pain in the ass) is a hellish level that dragged for too long.

Is Revilution better? What about Plutonia 2?
