Dos Box is fine but might as well continue with Unity.

Dosbox is fine. The problem is the config file issued with the game.

Properly configured, its the closest you’ll get to the original experience without the actual hardware.

If you’re getting drops with every game. It’s either A) You are using the king of toasters. Or B) You don’t know how to configure dosbox properly.

Oh yeah forgot C) You expect devs to care enough about old games to properly configure it.

Yeah, Steam version uses outdated DOSBox and it is poorly configured, so unless you're ready to update it and configure it yourself, I'd recommend playing the unity version.

According to sponge on Doomworld, he was considering fixing the busted DOSBox set-up for the Steam release of the classic Doom games, but thanks to entitled crybabies getting triggered over the Unity port being included with their copies of Doom and Doom II because "Bethesda-net is required to play Doom! Unity port ruins my rights to nothing but GZDoom!" blah blah blah even though problem was already patched out in the console releases ages ago, sponge ultimately canned those plans...

I second this. I can attest that the GOG version thankfully doesn't have these problems with DOSBox (though you might want to tweak some settings to get better picture quality) and the GOG version of the Unity port seems to be updated compared to the Steam release (but somehow lost its ability to type cheats the old fashion way thanks to something the GOG staff did with these releases).
