Best Mods is a very subjective term. For starters, you could try out the most popular ones:

- Brutal Doom
- Russian Overkill
- Hideous Destructor
- Doom 4 For Doom
- Golden Souls 2
- Trailblazer
- Guncaster
- Corruption Cards
- Beautiful Doom
- Smooth Doom

You can check out the ZDoom Forums for more info about mods. :The_Slayer:

A good place to start would be the Cacowards. They are the best mods released each year, chosen by the community.

For other recommendations Doomworld and the ZDoom forums are good places to look for mods.

There is mod that changes Doom textures to HD.
It's called " HD Doom " Don't misunderstand it with " Hdoom "
While these other suggestions are all great and effort-impressive mods, I myself prefer vanilla Doom gameplay, so megawads (level packs) are my go-to for Doom modding.

Some of my favorite ones are:
Sunlust (DO NOT PLAY THIS ONE FIRST - it's too hard even on the lower skill levels lol);
Speed of Doom;
Scythe 2 (difficulty warning);
Alien Vendetta;
Ancient Aliens;
Back to Saturn X - Episode 1;
Valiant;
TNT Revilution;
Eviternity;

For a complete beginner to community megawads i recommend Eviternity, Ancient Aliens or Back to Saturn X E1 on the Hey Not Too Rough or Hurt Me Plenty difficulty levels (community megawads as a whole really don't ♥♥♥♥ around on ultra-violence, that's not a skill level for a first playthrough and for a newcomer - I don't like ultra-violence myself on most megawads even after playing through them).

These are just some of the more popular megawads out of thousands upon thousands of them that exist.

Cacowards are always a good place to look if you get lost (although anything pre-2006ish will really show its age design-wise today, so I recommend playing newer WADs before trying out the old-school stuff (seriously WADs like Hell Revealed or Memento Mori really are not so fun at all after playing modern mods, and yet they both earned their respective Cacoward back in their hayday)).

E: If you really like gameplay mods, you can combine them with community megawads, but most level-packs are made with vanilla-doom gameplay balance in mind, since it's so clean and crisp compared to the often unbalanced nature of gameplay mods.

Many many moons back I recall playing an Alien version of Doom, it was fantastic and I would like to play it again. If memory serves me correct it was a WAD that we got and added it into our doom.

Can anyone tell me what happened to this WAD/Mod ?

Is it possible to download it " safely " :) from a WAD/Mod site ?

Thanks

It might be this one. The download you need for modern sourceports is Aliens 2000 from the Doom Speed Demo Archive.

The one from Doom Wad Station[www.doomwadstation.net] (direct link: http://www.doomwadstation.net/main/aliens.zip ) works as well.
Source: so happens I replayed Aliens TC from start to finish a week or so ago.

P.S. To OP: https://www.doomworld.com/10years/bestwads/
Skip ~1994-2005 unless something catches your eye.

Yes. I've been playing this version of Aliens TC all the time too.
(Pr)BOOM with complevel 3 is recommended, since Quasar fixed the TC with this port in mind. May not run properly with (G)Zdoom.

P. S. Note, as well, that this TC is for the Ultimate DOOM. Not for the DOOM II.
