DOOM II

DOOM II

Good Mods Compatible with GZDoom?
Hello, I'm just looking for good DooM mods that are compatible with GZDoom, specifically the 4.2.1 build.

First, I'd really like a good music replacement mod. Something that takes out all of the slower songs especially. It doesn't necessarily have to be modern HD remixes with live instruments, it can just as well be old .MIDIs taken from other games from back in the day. The big key, though, is that the music maintains a consistently high pace and intensity throughout. If anyone knows where to find such a mod, please point me to them.

Second, I'm also looking for map sets. My ideas on what DooM is are heavily skewed by modern source ports, I admit; but basically, I'm looking for map sets that:
  1. Feature fast and exciting combat encounters, that emphasize movement and aggression in their enemy placements;
  2. Reduce or downplay "puzzle" and platforming elements so that it's easier to just focus on the combat, but still feature some cleverly hidden secrets that encourage exploration;
  3. Are intended for continuous play through an entire map set, rather than being broken up into episodes;
  4. And are compatible with other gameplay mods.

Lastly, since I mentioned them in my previous section, I'd also like some gameplay mods.
  1. NO BRUTAL DOOM. I'm not looking for gore mods, either.
  2. In line with the first point in what I want from a map set, I really want the gameplay mods to further emphasize swift and aggressive gameplay.
  3. Total conversions are alright, but I'd really rather be able to mix-and-match my mods rather than only being able to use certain weapon sets with specific map sets.

I also used to have a mod that would enable continuous play in certain .WADs that were built with episodic structure, including being able to play all four episodes of Ultimate DooM as a single campaign, but I deleted it when it wouldn't work with Skillsaw's[doomwiki.org] "Valiant[doomwiki.org]" map set, despite containing map hash values for it in the continuous play mod. Now I can't find it anywhere on the Internet, or my Internet search skills are just garbage. Probably the latter.

If anyone wants a list of mods that I've already got, I can make a separate post for them.

EDIT: Just updated to the new 4.2.1 build of GZDoom. Just thought I'd update the post and let people know.

1 A total conversion mod. Ashes 2063.
2 a map pack. Back to saturn.
3 a map pack. Sunlust
4 a mod that will be released in the next 2 years. DooM revisited. (not alot of documentation on it as of yet)

I actually have both of the currently released episodes of "Back to Saturn X". Only really played "Get Out of My Stations" much, but it's damn good.

I guess I'll look up the others, but I have to ask if you really read the post itself much or just read the title and skipped down to the reply box.

Recommended mods:
Death Foretold (aka D4T) version 2.1 - IMO perfect blend of Doom 4 and OG Doom. You'll need fix for newest GZDoom, because some features were broken by 3.0 update and had to be disabled. Works perfectly in Zandronum, though. There's more up to date version of mod, but I don't like it as much.
High Noon Drifter - weapon mod that goes Weird West. Also works with Heretic and Hexen maps and enemies, yay!
Guncaster - really weird gameplay mod, where you play as a humanoid dragon, use overpowered guns, cast spells, throw dynamite, collect gold and buy more of above. Crazy in a good way.

As for continous gameplay, there's tool called "wadsmoosh" that blends all official maps into a single pk3 file. I always use it when playing official maps, jumping around with changemap command

Actually, speaking of "DooM 2016 in classic DooM", I do have the "ZION" mod, version 8. It's pretty cool.

"HND", eh, Westerns really aren't my thing.

"Guncaster", well, the problem is having all those different spells and whatnot that add complexity to the controls. You see, I play using a wired 360 controller, which kinda limits what controls can be used.

I actually have WADSmoosh, by the way. However, I used to have another mod, which I mentioned in the thread opener, that would allow you to play mods that use episodic structure as continuous campaigns. I just haven't been able to find it again.

Maybe it's because I've played a bunch of other weapon mods, but "LT Typhon" just didn't impress me.

And to all the rest of you, I'm still looking for a music mod, for the record.

I actually have the V4 of that, which works better for me since I can choose to load the game without the music mod if I wanted.

Guess I could give that a shot.

I actually have yet to play TNT: Evilution yet, might have to get around to that. And Plutonia Experiment. After all, I forked over the $15USD for DooM Classic Complete.

I already mentioned that I have the ZION mod. It includes all the weapon alt-fires and upgrades.

Yeah, I know about him. Subscribed already. I've actually gotten some mods from his videos, like Slaughterfest 2012, Sunder and Boom Power, among others.

I said right in the very first post that Brutal DooM is NOT what I'm looking for.

Learn to read, please.

its a meme btw.

Otherwise I recommend colonial marines 2014. If you want something ultra atmospheric, spooky and hard as nails. It is very good and even better if you are an aliens fan like me.

And you too, clearly didn't read the OP.

I'm not looking for "atmospheric" or "spooky"; I'm looking for "fast", "intense", "exciting". I don't want a slow-moving haunted house, I want a fast-paced roller-coaster thrill ride.

The mod he mentioned is pretty fast paced though.

You have a gameplay video?

Just imagine when the marines are stuck fighting in the hive. But over the entire thing. Mod starts slow.. letting the atmosphere in. But, once hell breaks loose, it is you vs them and you better be ready for a fight because there is a metric ton of these things trying to kill you. For the video. IcarusLives did a very good one. A quick youtube search will net you the video.
