DOOM II

What are your favorite source ports and why?
Here are my top 10 source ports and why I like them.

1. GZDoom - This is THE best source port, in my opinion. It's the most "technologically" advanced port due to the 3D floors, OpenGL rendering, and the extensive menu options to name a few reasons.

2. Zandronum - Basically just a TCP/IP fork off GZDoom, but I put this below GZDoom because everything Zandronum is capable of doing GZDoom is as well, but not the other way around. GZDoom isn't as user-friendly but if you know your command prompts, there's no real reason to use Zandronum over GZDoom in my opinion.

3. Doom95 - This was the first source port I played back when I first picked up Doom Collector's Edition. For its time, Doom95 was basically a super version of Doom and I'll never forget that first-hand experience at PC Doom on Doom95.exe (I grew up on Playstation Doom btw).

4. Chocolate Doom - You can't get better than the classics and Doom95 gets more and more incompatible with every new version of Windows. Chocolate Doom's open source approach with its vanilla-like purpose should always be at least in everyone's top-five list.

5. PrBoom(+) - I personally like watching demos and they're oddly entertaining. When it comes to demo playing or demo recording, if you're not doing it on PrBoom(+) then you're wrong.

6. ZDaemon - There are only two reasons I bother including ZDaemon: 1. It was my first experience at multiplayer Doom. 2. It generally has a greater playerbase than Zandronum. ZDaemon is waaaay behind Zandronum (Skulltag) technologically and its developers are controversial, to say the least.

7. Marine's Best Friend - When I first launched MBF and had three amazing dogs from Wolfenstein helping me out (they took up player 2, 3, and 4 spots) it gave the game a completely different feeling. It's very entertaining to play and I recommend you try it when you can. The dogs are very strong and they can take down barons if they gang up on them.

8. Doomsday Engine - Doomsday is something of an anomaly to me. This one has amazing graphic detail and it seems to be the most overall advanced port but it lacks in compatibility. I play it whenever I'm feeling fancy and want to see pretty little halo effects.

9. Odamex - I really wish Odamex got more love from the developers and the community. It's not an advanced multiplayer port and it was never meant to be. It's as classic Doom as you can get when you want to blast demons in cooperative or each other in deathmatch.

10. (Q)ZDoom - ZDoom is a great port. There wasn't too much that jumped out at me (especially with my affinity and bias for GZDoom) but it's a very stable port. The worst part about ZDoom is that it's discontinued and now QZDoom is its spiritual successor.

Curious to know what your favorite ports are! :)

I mostly play on ZDoom, if I can. GZDoom is great, but it can mess with your performance, if you don't have a very strong PC. Zandronum's pretty great for multiplayer, though.
