Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy

Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy

Engine update
I've been away from the game for awhile, but I remember reading that after all games released on steam there would be an engine upgrade.
Did they say anything else about it recently?

I am not sure if more official statements have happened. We are due for a 2025 year to come message at some point. It may become clearer then.

They release a news article today. They are working on the CM3 engine which is being made in Unity. I'm glad they're finally getting away from OpenGL which was very limiting on what they could do.

edit* - it looks like Steve has said that CM2 engine upgrade 5 will likely not happen because of the resources that would have to be diverted from CM3 engine development. This was on the Battlefront.com forums in response to questions about today's CM3 engine announcements.

I haven't played a CM since back in the 2000s / 2010ish I feel, but I really hope they're updating to a new engine

Any actual realism offered by the game seems to fall off because of the collision jankiness basically all units have navigating or looking around, everything has a very glassy movement to it that reminds me of old Arma games, etc

But like Arma leaping into a new engine in Reforger and actually solving that glassy issue, hopefully CM rebuilding their own engine can deliver something that feels more fluid and responsive over all too, as from watching footage it really feels like CM engine is still basically the same as it was more than 10 yrs ago lol

CM mission has lots of interesting titles but I'm really just not interested in the price point they sit at for an engine that feels like it doesn't actually competently handle pathfinding / collision etc inspite of what it otherwise manages to simulate well. The way the engine currently kind of fights players makes it seem like it's functioning improperly, which is not really what I'm looking for in a combat sim and would kind of expect something more fluid in general with a purchase

Hope CM can deliver on new engine in the future, though I don't doubt the work hours involved in actually delivering a new engine in the vision they hope is going to be easy! I still watch the odd videos etc here and there because the games do seem otherwise pretty interesting.

I would love to try Shockforce 2, for example, but not at $80 Canadian :p Videos I've watched are still pretty good though, and I feel like there are so few actual modern combat tactics game that try to realistically simulate which is why I love Graviteam Tactics: Mius Front modern dlcs, too. Shockforce 2 would be awesome for those various modern mech / armored platforms and such.

I'm a player since the very first CM, may be 20 years ago.
For all its qualities, it's clear that CM is becoming visually dated. Even if the game's mechanics are unsurpassed. The map editor works on 8m squares, so even the smallest bocage road is actually a wide avenue, and the angle of the roads means that only approximate maps or zigzag roads are possible if you want to respect the real topography. A few mods have improved the overall rendering, but given what is currently being produced, the game is outdated in this respect. There's no doubt that Steve is still interested in his “baby” and that CM will continue on its way in better conditions.
I've posted many times thinking they had abandoned the game and retired, but seeing the news of CM3 being for real, and pretty far into development already, has me excited for once, and happily eating crow. I don't care if they ever update the others, just get to work on releasing the game in a new engine, whatever theatre that may be.
