Abathor FAQ

1. How does game saving work?

In Adventure Mode, your progress is automatically saved at the end of each individual stage.

In Heroic and Epic Mode, saving occurs upon defeating the final boss of an entire zone.

2. Why do I lose my gear when I load my game?
When you load your game, your equipment is replaced with money, allowing you to adjust your gear to suit the current zone. Take advantage of this mechanic to tailor your character to the challenges of each area. In most zones, there is a shop in the first stage, where you can spend the money you receive. For example, gear that increases damage would be most beneficial in Zone 5, while agility items might be more useful in Zone 7 due to its platforming areas, especially if you find them difficult.

3. What mode should I play first?

Adventure Mode: Designed for enjoyment and optimal for cooperative play.

Heroic Mode: The default mode that requires skill and strategy, and is also necessary to unlock Epic Mode.

After these modes, you will find Epic Mode, tailored for completionists seeking the ultimate challenge, and finally SpeedRun Mode for competitive players looking to test their skills.

4. How much boost does gear give you?Equipment is essential in Abathor, a game that demands technical skill. For example, a character like Kritias or Azaes, who rely heavily on skill-based attacks, can see their damage-per-second (DPS) boosted by more than 50% when equipped with all gear that enhances damage and skill charge. While individual stat increases may seem small, stacking critical hit chance, damage, attack speed, and skill enhancements greatly amplifies the overall performance of your character.

Besides, the Golden Beetle enhances usable items, making characters like Azaes incredibly powerful with their ability to summon demons that can damage distant enemies, even those with shields. Overall, equipping all items can lead to an increase of more than 100% in a character’s TOTAL POWER (including strenght, defense, speed, skills, and more), roughly doubling their effectiveness. Healing potions and extra credits are also crucial for extending survival.

We also aim to maintain a balanced difficulty throughout the game, avoiding excessive power-ups that could render challenges trivial, as seen in some Metroidvania or RPG titles.

5. What type of gameplay experience can I expect?

Abathor is neither a Metroidvania nor a modern Souls-like game. Instead, it offers a gameplay experience reflective of classic titles, with fewer stimuli, lights, and frantic pacing. While modern games have their merits, Abathor stays true to its retro roots.

At 2 it says that the equipment is replaced with money. Does that mean that I receive the exact money equivalent to the equipment I had equipped? If I want to change my gear at the beginning of a zone do I have to exit the game at the beginning of the zone and open the game again for my gear to be replaced with money? If I lose and use a credit does that work as reloading the game (as in, having my gear replaced with money)? How can I check which I gear I have equipped? I like a lot of aspects of the game and plan to buy it, but it's rather unclear to me how the gearing system works. Thank you.

Hello! Thanks for your questions. We’ll clarify how the gearing system works in Abathor:

You don't receive the exact money equivalent to each piece of equipment, but rather a set amount per zone. The further you progress, the more money you'll receive. In Adventure Mode, you get money per stage, while in Heroic Mode, it’s given per zone.

If you want to "reset" your character at the beginning of a zone, you’ll indeed need to reload the game. In Adventure Mode, you'll receive money after each completed stage. In Heroic Mode, you’ll receive money per zone—so if you're playing Heroic and want to reconfigure your character, it’s best to do it right when you enter a new zone.

If you lose and use a credit, you’ll keep all your current equipment, so it’s recommended to buy credits when you’re low on them and still have many stages to go within a zone. You’ll only have to reload the game and convert your equipment to money if you reach GAME OVER.

You can check your gear only when you reach a store.

Happy to answer these and any other questions you may have. Thanks again for your interest in Abathor, and we hope you enjoy the game!
