Character palette swap in Shadows Over Mystara?

Anyone know why this happens? My character seems to randomly flip to the alternate sprite sometimes after I die and continue. This doesn't matter so much for most classes, but it gives me different spells for magic users, and I like to keep the same character for the whole game.

The attack button selects the main version while the start button selects the alternate version in the arcade game. Not sure if that still works for this one.

I think it might be swapped in this one, then. I'll test that.

Pressing start picks the opposite of what is shown, so if you always pick with start you'll flip back and forth between the two versions. Pick with Attack to stick with one.
