Limit Continues ?
In many arcade ports they go that route to give you unlimited continues which I think is bad, because you have no incentive to really learn to play good. If you're playing on a real arcade machine, it hurts if have to take a continue because you have to pop some money in it. This essential aspect falls flat in the home versions.

Is there a way to limit the continues or does the game keep track how many continues are used in a playthrough ? What goes into the leaderboards ?

There's a house rules option where you only get 1 credit, but yea, I have no idea why they didn't add such a no-brainer option.

Noob magic users just credit feed and spam magic with unlimited continues, it's stupid.

They should add an achievement to finish the game without continues. That would help.

So there is no leaderboard for "1 credit" players ?

Well I was just about to purchase the game until I heard about this... All the built in options for this new version and they include a default unlimited continue cheat, and the only other option is a hardcore mode? How about some middle ground please?

List of house rules:

Unbreakable: Equippable items have infinite durability
Enemy rush: A time attack mode where the game clock starts with 30 seconds and the clock increases with each enemy killed.
Vampirism: Gives health for every attack you deal an enemy
Lockpick: All chests are open.
Hedgehog: Every time you take damage it depletes your gold and if you run out of gold it's game over
Elimination mode: Find out who can survive the longest, no bonus points are allowed
Make It Rain: Enemies and chests drop tons of loot.

Maybe Vampirism + Elimination is viable way to play it. I don't know...

I usually setup rules of play for myself, like self made Iron Man Mode in Dishonored.

So for all my MAME playing experience and now this I shall challenge myself to finish the game by

1st - 9 lives
2nd- 5 lives
3rd - 3 lives

and so on, I'd encourage you to set your own goals and you'll be happier with your experience.

It does suck though to not have the game feed this need, but hey don't let that stop you from having your own fun.

The house rule "Elimination mode" is the one-credit option?

adding an option to let you select the quantity of credits would be nice

Wow. Can't believe that this sort of thing is allowed on the PC. I mean newbie consoles I can understand...

Pretty big slip up not letting us set number of continues, or earning continues with points.

It kills the game on the later bosses if there's a magic user who can just empty all his spells for a good minute, then die and do it again.

Do you bunch of guy realize that it is an arcade game right? As long as money isnt a problem you can just toss money at the game. The only problem is not having enough coins. Havent seen an arcade port since the snes days that had limited credits, and most of them were port of neogeo.

Yeah. I was one of those kids who's spend pretty much all money I got my meathooks on at KI, D&D Tower of Doom, McV and SF2 Turbo in the arcades, so I think I realize that this is an arcade game.

I trust I don't have to re-post why I think it should have been balanced. And I don't buy that it can't be done if it is a pure arcade port, since it has all those other mutators that aren't present in the arcade version's boot options.

I disagree that there is no incentive - my incentive is to limit how many credits I use because I want to be better at the game. Wanting to do better is its own incentive, I don't need something financially spanking me every time I fail to want to do better.

My advice - tally your own credit uses, only play with people you know, and don't worry about how other people play a game that they spent their hard-earned money on.
