Arcade Stick w/ JoyToPlay control scheme!

I play this game on an lap-held arcade stick (commonly refered to as a "fight stick"), however this game has limited controller support, but the solution to this roadblock is quick & simple.

There is a very good freeware program called JoyToPlay that reads controller inputs and registers them as Keyboard presses. In other words, JoyToPlay grants us the ability to use any generic device in any game that is controlled using keyboard functions.

If you have the capacity to play this game with an classic arcade style joystick layout, I highly recommend it. It is a wonderful experience.

In addition, I believe that if find yourself playing alot of arcade style 8-directional games like this one, you should most definately invest in an arcade stick. You can buy all the electronic components for ~25$ on ebay from china, and mount them in anything shaped like a box. No soldering required, and a 5minute youtube video (of which there are many) can show you how to do it. However honestly, the wiring is so simple you could even figure it out within a few minutes on your own.
