How do i build my own house / farm?

i didnt get how to do it, it says need an altar but how?

Get some stone and wood while in an area that lets you build then press the build? (I forget the exact name) button on the right. When you begin to build the altar it has drop down menus on the wood etc to pick which wood type to use.
