So.... I.M. mines
Never played Dark Forces back during original release so this is my first time experiencing it. Really enjoying it so far, but JFC the IM mines are the most infuriating thing about this game. Depending on the situation, the game practically forces you to have to tank the damage from them (e.g. mines placed just behind a door you open and are about to walk through). And don't even get me started on mines that are purposely hidden behind the sprites of weapon/shield pickups. It's damn near impossible to run away b/c AoE is large even if you're kinda "pre-running" away before the trigger sound happens.

Yeah, they've always been very annoying and used to be even harder to spot in the game's original 320x200 resolution. The concussion rifle is the easiest way to clear them, but you have to know or suspect that they're there first. Fortunately, only a few missions use them or use them in sneaky ways, so, once you come across one, you can expect there to be more and can try to be more careful, particularly when approaching doorways or piles of pickups (what sadistic map maker thought that hiding mines underneath ammo would be funny?).

When I know that there are mines in a mission, I'll often shoot at every doorway and pile of pickups with the concussion rifle before I get too close. Alternately, with doorways, it's usually possible to get close enough to peak around them and spot whether there's a mine on either side before it detonates, but that gets to be a hassle and it's easier to just shoot the doorways. Fortunately, there's plenty of ammo for the concussion rifle because it uses the same energy as a few other weapons, so it's not a big deal to waste it.

That is a problem mainly on Jabbas ship. You can avoid damage from the mines on other side of doors by placing one of your own mines in delay mode on the other side of the door. Then step back and wait until it detonates. You should hear two additional explosions a second later.

Of course that only works if you know where exactly the mines are placed in the level. So you need to memorize the entire level.

Other mines can be disarmed savely if you step towards them and walk backwards as soon as you hear the sound. Running and taking cover behind corners or pillars avoids splash damage from the explosions.

Best way to get rid of other mines is to use explosives (I almost never use the mortar, so I always have lots of ammo for that thing) or the concussion rifle.

Welcome to gaming in the 90s :) There are so many flaws in this game but I have fond memories of it. I own both a copy for Windows and on the original Playstation.

"Behind a door" Jabba's palace got you too, huh? xD

If I was Jabba and wanted to defend my palace against intruders and escaping prisoners, behind the doors is exactly where I would be planting mines.

If it's so smart, why don't you see that done in real life at private estates, military bases, prisons and so on? It's because it's not smart. It's really dumb because it would mean that your own men would either not be able to use those doors or would blow themselves up. It's like running trip wire across every door in your house in order to defend it from potential break-ins. Would you do that, even though it'd make it hard for you to get around your own house? Of course you wouldn't because it makes no sense when you think about it.

Once you know the map you can clear them very easily with the concussion rifle. Even through doors. To the point where they are no longer a problem.

I are a pain but these games from back in the day were designed for multiple runs and only get better once you know the maps and enemy placements.

Because it's illegal. What the hell? Are you comparing a sci fi space monster to real life? Mines are known to be the most cruel stuff used during wars and would be absolutely a crime to set up mines as any sort of security measure to defend against break ins.

But yes, it makes perfectly sense to boob trap your own house against invaders. Have you not watched Home Alone? If you know where you put that, you won't have any troubles.

Plus, Jabba doesn't wonder around his dungeons does he? Plus Jabba couldn't care less if his own men fall on to it. The guy had a trap door right in front of his throne on his palace.

Are you seriously comparing real life with Star Wars?

It makes perfect sense that Jabba's place will have this type of troll traps. Stop being butthurt for dying.

It doesn't make sense to booby trap your house/ship when you don't expect invaders. Kevin's house didn't have all of those Micro Machines on the floor 24/7. He put them there only when there was an imminent threat.

Jabba's ship wasn't under attack. It captured Katarn's ship and threw him as a prisoner into the krayt dragon pit to die. There wasn't an expectation of him escaping, so there was no need to booby trap the ship. All that that would've done is eliminate his own men one by one, and though he may not care about their deaths, as you pointed out, it doesn't make any sense to keep losing men and mines and needing to replace both for no reason.

Also, it's not just Jabba's ship that has mines on the other side of doorways. The Executor has them, too, and we're told in the pre-mission briefing that Katarn gets on board under the disguise of being a smuggler. So, why would they place mines all around the ship, where Stormtroopers are patrolling, and right outside your starting location when you're just a smuggler that they welcomed onto the ship? Also, there were no mines on the Death Star, and that was a lot more important than the Executor.

If the enemy knows that you're coming and from what direction and puts mines between you and them, then that makes some sense. In the case of Jabba's ship and the Executor, though, that's not the case and we're expected to believe that mines are just always scattered throughout the ships, which doesn't make sense.
