you're right and i've played the updated modded versions, they really are fantastic for being a free resource. but having an official remaster where all you have to do is click install and it will work on current and future operating systems with no tinkering is such a convenience.
it's a way to upkeep and preserve the experience for people who are nostalgic for it. and make it accessible to people who never got to play it originally. i just love remasters, and even straight ports like MGS collection. i think they're great. too many wonderful games get lost to time because they get locked on old consoles or never updated for modern hardware.
Now Im playing Jedi Outcast for the first time and dear god, its awful, shooting really sucks, level design is even more convoluted than in previous games, and fk this night level with snipers on every roof.
I played Dark Forces 2 for so many years when I was kid, challenging people on Gamespy to duels, messing around with SBX modding. It was honestly so damn good that I was almost disappointed with the sequel.
I really hope we hear something soon, if not there is already a guy doing a remake of it and it in Unreal Engine and it looks and plays amazingly.
You can check out the demo for it now:

And yes there is proper lightsaber dismemberment in it

These fan mods are great and all, but are typically a one-person endeavours, or maybe 2-3 people working in their spare time. You often get a new level or three after several years, but almost never the whole thing.
I really, really hope Dightdive does Jedi Knight 1 + Mysteries of the Sith. Those games are amazing. I mean, the entire Jedi Knight series is great, but should be done chronologically. So is Dark Forces btw., so happy to have this in remastered form.
It does not. It has Joystick options, so if you want to just use one analog stick on your controller, you could technically use it, but I wouldn't recommend that. HOWEVER, the Force Engine version of DF1, does have controller support. I was tripping out on the fact I was playing it last night using my PS5's Dualsense!
Yeah that's great and all but I think what OP meant was something more on the level of a Nightdive remaster.
They did good work with that don't get me wrong but a fully fledged remaster by a studio that has an incredible track record, especially with System Shock, would be incredible.
exactly. the way they did this remaster is perfect in my opinion. they added every quality of life feature i could’ve asked for, and they made most of it optional so you can play the game as it originally was.
it all just works without any extra tinkering or steps and i would absolutely pay good money for that with the sequel.
as a side note though, i have downloaded a bunch of mods for jedi knight to get it working and playable on modern hardware, but it did take some work. it still holds up as a great game and looks amazing in 4K at unlocked frames. it would just be really nice for all that to be easily accessible to anyone and as simple as just installing and playing.
Well, it's nice and all, but still windows-only binary which has been released and will be abandoned soon, just like the original dos version.
It's great that the remaster assets work in the force engine, since TFE at least can be hacked on and extended/fixed/ported to a toaster by others.
I hope that if nightdive does a JK/MotS remaster they use openjkdf2 as engine, and contribute back the code improvements/changes required to get their new assets working.
I'd gladly pay the 30$ for the improved assets alone.
Fingers crossed Nightdive are already working on Dark Forces 2, going by their track record they usually do the entire series like with Turok and System Shock but it still may take some time to come out since they aren't the biggest studio around but I can wait.
ngl i would happily pay full price for a jedi outcast + jedi academy remaster bundle. one can dream.
