The Force Engine
I wonder how much better would this be compared to the free The Force Engine project. which is free (as long as you have the original SW:DF) and really good.

The remaster is only better if you want your 320x200 cutscenes AI upscaled to 4K so they can look like someone smeared vasoline on your monitor.

The guy making The Force Engine mentioned in a blog that before the remaster was announced Nightdive reached out and was in talks with him. TFE's level editor is the thing I'm most interested in.

Considering how Nightdive ruined the Blade Runner remaster so badly they were forced to bundle the original I'm not very hopeful.

I haven't been hopeful of this company since they sold themselves to Atari despite what the media says. This is probably going to turn out as any other KEX based project with cool features but nothing to improve replayability, and some inaccuracies that render it incompatible with community maps.

The Force Engine project offers more visual enhancements. Like GZDoom does. While this remaster is a lot more vanilla and authentic to the original, like Unit Doom is.

You're tripping. The cutscenes were remade from scratch. It's not AI upscale at all.
Nightdive is doing the same thing they did with Quake 2. Cutscenes are completely remade.

Well...

I don't really see the need of a simple remaster, which this seems to be so far. TFE actually does an amazing job at that. (..and more!)

I played Dark Forces literally over hundreds of times as I used to speedrun it after playing it casually for over two decades. I played pretty much all of the custom levels and content you could find on DF-21. So, yeah I understand that I am not the average player this remaster is aimed at, but I think this release should also include some treats for us veterans, too!

What I would be interested in is new content. I mean, include the original game remastered, sure, but why not new additional content? Like a new story campaign, with missions to do, secrets to uncover? Like an expansion pack!

Also, custom level support feels like a must to me. So many great levels out there, made by fans... They are pretty much part of the DF experience. You shouldn't leave them out!

That being said, I will buy this anyway... Well... Not everyday you have a "new" Dark Forces to buy...

And how they still haven't released the patch for System Shock

Ooh that didn't age well lol.. non ai new but faithful cutscenes CONFIRMED, ty digital foundry!

This looks fantastic and clearly a ton of time and effort has gone into it.

At the end of the day a fan project can easily exceed one like this because of time.. night dive can't work on something like this forever but they have proven (after a couple stumbles but it happens) they have what it takes to do a great job and remain faithful.

They will never be able to work on a project for a decade and constantly refine and refine but you know what they do is good and both can exist and happily be played.

Comparing a bug in a project done for a large company is very different as well. More often than not a dev like night dive literally isn't allowed to revisit something once the contract is fulfilled or time on it expires and even then they can only do updates when the license holder approves and pays for said work.

i have been playing the sourceport in anticipation of this remaster and tbh the sourceport is great, I don't see any reason to pay 30$ for the remaster when it's so close to the sourceport...

His comment might be a little blunt but you cant blame him for thinking its AI. frankly I thought it looked like AI up-scaling in the rest of the game too. Ill take their word for it but Tomb Raider was pretty clearly upscaled too. if im being honest ill bet it is and then they go over everything and fix the odd stuff ai does to images. its not much of a "didnt age well" own if most swear they can see AI under a think coat of paint lol.

To be clear im a big fan of nightdive updating these older great games (system shock was amazing) and I loved the kex quake remaster. I wouldnt even raise an eyebrow at this remaster at all if I didnt think the price was a little inflated. though its probably to fork over some profit to disney

And nor should you. The Force Engine team did as good, if not actually better, a job for free.

Yeah this is kind of the elephant in the room for me. I have Dark Forces on the original MS-DOS CD, as well as the Steam release. I finally finished the game properly for the first time last year thanks to The Force Engine. It was a great experience but I'm not in a particular hurry to do it again on the remaster.

I love the gunplay in Dark Forces, but I can't say I think of the later level designs with much fondness. The level designs were a huge step up from other FPS of its time, but some were really obscure like the Detention Center, or planting the charges on the Arc Hammer. Even with a copy of the original hint book it still was pretty confusing.

That's not their fault. They said the patch is ready but the publisher won't let them release it until the console version is finished.

Ive been waiting for that patch too. obviously we dont know the specifics other than what they've said, but not communicating at all while we wait isnt very good. I love what nightdive is doing but the system shock update is not being handled well at all. This, coupled with the lack of the Tomb raider update that epic already has is probably making me more salty about it than I might normally be

The new tomb raider?
That wasn't Night Dive though if so
