I think most of us probably played 5 first if I had to guess lol

But cuz we played in order as fans of the series.

I can tell you 5 and 6 have a story toed together, but you don't need to play 5 first however there are a gew bits that are a little better with that knowledge or funny as they reference 5.

If it's purely for the story you could play 5 on the lower difficulty beat it and jump to 6, but I wouldn't grind out 5 fully then 6 unless you really love grind xD

EDF 6 can stand on its own legs, BUT it has alot of those "this is a sequel" moments that hit different if you have played 5.

Yeah i think playing 5 before 6 is a good idea but its not needed. The game play will be the same but the story will be ALOT more fun if you've played through 5 first.

Start with 5. Blow through the story on a lower difficulty then come to 6.

If you care about the story, I highly recommend playing 5 first because it makes 6 much more impactful.

I highly agree with the other opinions here. 6 is so much more impactful after playing 5 despite being a standalone experience you can also enjoy

Play EDF5 first and then play EDF 6.
EDF6 is so much better after having played EDF5
It's a direct sequel to EDF5 and there are story elements that reference the events that happened in EDF5.
You could play EDF6 but then a lot of the stuff doesn't make any sense, EDF6 doesn't make a lot of sense as it as already.
It's only when you complete both EDF5 and EDF6 that the story makes some sense.

EDF 6 works as a self-contained story and not playing 5 beforehand will make more missions feel new and fresh since a vast amount is recycled. Playing EDF 5 will make the story of 6 feel more Impactful and "complete" but isn't necessary to understand it.

I'd advise you to just play 6 because chaining together the entirety of EDF 5 before 6 will burn you out - simple as. You can finish 6 and take a breather from playing it and then use the following years while you wait for EDF 7 to play 5.

This is a continuation of 5. If you have both, just play through 5 first for the story only then move on to 6 as the guns and gameplay will be mostly similar. If you don't have 5 then it may be a good idea to watch all the cutscenes on youtube or something so you have a good idea of what the story is or actually buy it (it's a good game). Would highly recommend going to nexus mods and downloading popular mods for both games though such as lootmaster, increased drop box limits for levels, etc.

5 then 6. 4.1 if you want to see how they do the universe canon flip every couple of games.

I highly recommend checking out World Brother 1 or 2 if you enjoy any of the three above.

This is why I suggest 5 before 6. Otherwise there is no reason to play 5 for gun gameplay unless you really end up liking the series but it's also hard to go backwards with these games.

Based on that line of thinking, you might as well recommend EDF4.1 first since EDF5 greatly improves QoL and is in every way better than EDF4.1, except for the song.

In EDF4.1, if the weapons suck, they will continue to suck. Hence when you get a weapon crate drop in 4.1, you don't feel excited.
In EDF5, weapons have grades and can be upgraded. That weapon crate you got, it could lead to making your weapons good. It often leads to a situation where a lower level weapon that has been upgraded is outright better than a higher level weapon without upgrades.

Due to this change alone, I find it hard to go back to EDF4.1 even though I started playing the series with EDF4.1 on Steam.

That works the other way too though. It sucks when you get a new weapon in 5/6 and it's actually worse than a lower level one you already have because it has low rolls. In 4.1 I get a new weapon and it's guaranteed to be an upgrade.

Especially when you try to farm weapons in the long run (or using a mod that removes the restriction to speed up the process), you usually end up finding 1-20 upgrades that barely max out the weapon stats after collecting hours of farming (or minutes)

Start with 4.1. Yeah it's less refined than 5 and 6 but you will appreciate the later games more if you have 4.1 experience.
