Its a great series and I think all of the games are pretty damn good.
I do think somethings are currently holding the game back, some can be fixed, and others not so much. Too many crashes, it's the least reliable EDF game I have played to date. Hopefully, that can be fixed though so I'm not going to beat on that drum too much.
Next I definitely appreciate the developers coming up with a clever explanation as to why we are constantly revisiting locations just with different monsters. While is was something we just kinda waved away in the past, it's nice to see a narrative explanation that tries to make more sense of it. Unfortunately, it is at the cost of pacing. That constant loop and return to basically a non-mission is just a pace killer. I just don't need a reason to revisit the same tutorial mission 9 separate times and any mission that has no rewards is just a total waste of everybody's time. Those should be skippable cutscenes at best.
Once you look past that its more EDF. Some minor changes to weapons and classes I'm not a fan of, others I am. In the end it's a push. So at the end of the day it's probably the best EDF game so far.
However, I think the storytelling of 6 and 5 pales to 4.1. That game had a cinematic feel when presenting you new threats. The closest (so far) this game gets is with the red ants in the crater. They emerge over the lip and become an imposing wall descending upon you. EDF 6 needs more of that.
I am only up to Erginus in EDF 6, so hopefully the future missions give a better feel on the atmosphere front.
