Thoughts after demo.
First i really enjoyed it and beat the goblin king thing. I can't wait for the full release.

1st: purely for pacing reasons please start us with 2 workers. I think it'll make the start just feel better and more fun.

2nd: little more detail on upgrades. I upgraded the castle for more unit slots thinking i could deploy more unites on he front line. Was just confusing at times and ruined runs from wasting resources.

3rd: please allow workshop modding. Even if it's just cosmetics. I can see some really fun modding potential. I know personaly when a game offers good modding i always buy all their dlc in support of it.

4th: didn't try it on my steam deck and assume it should work but this is a perfect steam deck game.

That's all i got atm. Loving the potential here and excited. Good luck on the team. You got a hidden gem here.

1. You can unlock more starting workers at the village! If you start with 2 it just multiplies too fast. I want a game where you really feel your progress. But that means you need to start weak. Maybe I can improve that (like another starting wood), but I'm not sure on this.

2. Yes. Typical first demo stuff. I had ten tester before. You just need feedback for this stuff. See people playing it. Will def get better.

3. To be honest with you that is a nice-to-have for me. This is my first gaming project. You have to draw the line somewhere. Just for the good of the project. Only replacing visuals would also be kind of lame, wouldn't it? But you know I really did think about this at all. So I'm open to ideas!

4. Hope so!

Thank you so much for your feedback :)

Thanks for the reply. That does all make sense. Those were just my first thoughts on it. :) hopefully you get a lot of good feedback with this demo.

Some observations from random demo player:

1. Respawning of resources seems rather cryptic. I had geologist running several turns but it seemed two workers on quarry still produced barely any stone compared to start. No clue how it is supposed to work. Generally resource production seemed to plummet farther I got.

2. Leveling up units with resources needs some more info. I have no clue what it did. Leveling up in tavern shows what happens but when using resources it doesn't tell much.

3. At later stages of game there needs to be some way to skip the start. For demo length it was fine but if game is 10 times longer repeating start days with super easy enemies every time gets really boring.

4. Meta progression of hero seemed really slow. Before demo ended I had only bought single armor upgrade.

5. It would be nice that if you get more resources than you can store from something like that thing on map that gives 5 wood it either warned that resources are lost or stored excess somewhere.

6. I have no clue what red x on map is supposed to do. I clicked something once and it told something about checking red x often but I got no clue at all what that is.

7. Monk Description is strange. It says it blesses enemies. Usually blessing means making things stronger. I have no clue what his ability does since it does not show damage number.

8. I had one hang up when I smashed lot of buttons in tavern to skip it. No clue what I did. Auto save worked very well and I could just continue after killing the game.

Random dev says thanks! Will work on all of that.

3. The idea is that you make the game harder yourself to get more glory and unlock more stuff. So it'll always be risk reward no matter how far you are.

going to be honest here, I'm not feeling progress, I'm feeling grind and hitting a brick wall.

Also, I can do identical builds and either sail past the first boss, or die horribly, the only thing that makes a difference is the NPC you get on day 2. thats a huge change, some of them you may as well quit right away if its a bad one.

biggest thing I'd like right now is a way to change our perma upgrades between runs. The places on the map you unlock that give you starting resources, no idea what was best early on so took an even spread, but its not what I'd take now. should be able to change them somehow.

Yes, that will be a feature later on.

:D my turn

so to start things off, ive figured out how to save edit and that let me explore most of what was in the demo. and no, i didnt figure out how to do this before i got the no menus(building/upgrades) bug.

if you want to try and stump or slow down cheaters for the real game i would suggest switching from building names to numbers and then with the resource numbers multiplying them and using random addition to hide what they are. or bury them within spaghetti code, that's always fun.

1: i really enjoyed this game, but, and probably because its a demo, it was such a pain to get past the 50 glory mark and i didnt even try for 75. i only had a couple issues with the game but they have their own topic.

2: generally same opinion as others here, im not sure if the balance is off because its a demo or if we got to see what the main game will be like but without cheating i have no idea how long it will take to max out the city for more workers and it feels like not all of the hero's stat upgrades are actually in the game or its actually just super weak.

3A: units and the hero, my other units quickly outclassed the hero even with nearly every stat upgraded. i got the dinosaur and its a better hero in every way. before i started cheating i was able to clear several levels just because i had that unit.

3B: Hero's Armor multiplier. i'd like to know if theres a bug here. its nice but with the 2nd upgrade they cant even fully regenerate their armor before the battle starts so it feels almost wasteful to get it since its not even 1/3, maybe 1/4, of the way regenerating from the start of the round before the fighting starts. should they be starting with max armor or going from default up to their bonus armor?

4: theres not enough and i want more XD

5: several of the runs before i started cheating were lost due to running out of food to revive downed units. if berry bushes would either regrow faster, be plantable by something, or not be destroyed upon fully harvested it would really help players learning the game.

6: im split on this one, adding destruction of buildings. being able to destroy something we built will make the game drastically easier but this style of games isnt suppose to be easy. Half of the reason i want this is so i can building swap as needed instead of getting locked in and the other is to see the affects of the shrines since they have such a small AoE but i cant see it before building them.

7: give the shrines larger aoe or show their circle before we build it :P it was important enough to get its own section. you could even set it so the upgraded roads extend the range allowing them to hit a couple more buildings near by. for example, the building zone south west of the castle looks perfect for the bread buildings and a shrine but it only reaches one building.

8: will the building upgrades have more then one worker in the main game? in the demo a mason is pretty much useless but even for the full release having just one of them would take days or months to brick the entire city on their own.

you can discover berries with the geologist I believe, he can find any random resource, but you are supposed to move on to hunters at some point. Bread takes far too many buildings for the demo.

You might need a stronger ranged comp if having trouble with revives and keeping hero armored. Death priest is the strongest and only way I have won, but runemancer can get you to around day 12.
AranwenL May 14, 2023 @ 2:33am
Edit: this comment is no longer valid due to changes in the game. 5/28/23

definitely need better range, without another charge supporting the hero i couldnt consistently beat the first boss and before i started cheating i built too slowly to have bars for buying more units.

crossbowman is great at max level but without cheating resources i havent been able to reach that point. before tier 3 even the halfling is better imo. i do really like the runemancer, need to play around more to get the build down without cheating.

ive spent the night breaking the game as much as possible instead of working on build strats. did find the most optimized spots for the production shrines though.
