What does Banish actually do?

I know I can click the big X on top of a hero to banish him...but what does it do?
I've banished a few, and just saw one of the heroes I banished in another run appear in a new run. Does Banish only work for that run? Or...what is the point of it anyway?

Banish does only work that run. Say you roll Jester, Treant and Skeleton but don't want to use jester in the run you have no matter what so you banish it. You still think that Treant and Skeleton could be ok from the adventurer so you just re-roll. You then get Runescribe and pick that. You get to day 6 and the adventurer, he will never offer you jester because you banished him. You banish a Treant and a Djinn then pick up a Skeleton. on day 12 you build a portal. Jester Treant and Djinn will never be offered because all 3 are banished.
