I'm not familiar with the source material (hadn't heard of the book until I saw this game was based on it), but it would be nice to be able to build huge, complex ant hills with a lot of things going on
Here for example, this nest that I currently control has 4 available chambers (notice the "4" inside the white square):

As another example, this nest has 7 chambers available:

Another way to see how many chambers are available is to aim at the nest icon (just like I'm doing in the screenshots above), which brings up the nest info, and then look at the squares underneath the nest's name.
In the very first screenshot above for example, if you look underneath "Bel-O-Kan's Headquarters" you'll see 5 filled/colored squares and 4 white/empty ones. This means the nest has a grand total of 9 chambers--5 of which are used up, and 4 of which are still available.
Furthermore, you can see what exactly those 5 'used up' chambers consist of by studying the list of items below the nest's name and squares. In this case, our Warriors legion is taking up 2 chambers (indicated by the two red squares to the left of "Warriors"), the Cartographers upgrade is taking up 2 chambers, and the Headquarters Chamber is taking up 1 chamber.
Finally, let's say for example you wanted to free up 2 chambers in order to have 6 available rather than 4. One possibility would be to simply destroy the Cartographers upgrade, since it takes up 2. Destroying something is done in much the same way as building it: just navigate to the desired item and then hold the correct key.
Thank you SO much!
Is there a way to get more chambers and if so how?
OMG, just playing 10 minutes and with the understanding from your post this is much easier to play and know what I am doing.
Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much man!
