How do you use the special weapons ?

So how do you use the special weapons ? I unlock Leo's and whenever I press the use item button all he does is making a motion of combining his sword, then a flash of light appear and nothing happens. No weapon combining whatsoever.

Same problem here with Mickey and I have been unable to find any ingame instructions. He just does a quick movement with his special weapon but it does nothing.

It seems to be used in special moves with the right stick and trigger. The ones that use bars of energy. I think that's it. The animation when you select it does seem odd though.

mike and leo's special weapons aren't visible in hand until you do one of the moves that uses them.

with a special weapon you have to unlock it first, each weapon has 3 ranks to unlock

Select the Special Weapon in you inventory... then use it to equip. Now when you do special attacks it will use the Special Weapon.

So it's only visible when I'm using special attacks ?
The thing is when I tried it in the dojo tutorial (the quarter circle move I believe), he still use his normal weapon.
