Playing on your own dedicated server
Hi!
We were a group of friends that really enjoyed this game together from the start. However, after 5 hours of intensive playing, the server crashed and did not come back on.
Then I decided to try to start a server myself on an old i7 laptop with 8gb ram, ssd and win 7. It installed pretty fast and i made some config files and batch files for startup.
The server seemes to start pretty well, but I saw lots of red error messages, which I belived was because the game started the first time.
When I found the server in the list, after opening two ports, I could connect to it.
I could not, however make a character, or press start.
Could that be because the server is running on win 7, or is it another issue?

Regards,
Thomas Iversen

EDIT: I now see that I cannot run the dedicated server on another computer and still play it on my main computer. Do I really have to buy it two times to host a server for my friends that also bought the game?

Yeah for first timers selfhosting is often a little bit difficult, but I host currently 3 gameservers for our little group. Astroneer / Stationeers / StarsEnd
Astroneer is the easiest one and Stationers is more or less standard but StarsEnd is a little bit more pain in the butt.

Any hints or configs you adjust to make it run good?

Why can you not play with a dedicated server on your laptop without buying a new copy? Then again, $15 for another copy of the game is cheaper than a month of hosting for most companies.

The use of a dedicated server is known?
Well, if not then ask yourself how should another group or clan member play if you shutdown your desktop or notebook?
Dedicated server normally runs 24/7 and gives access to all players allowed to use it as playground.

There are many small or medium groups out there who prefer to play only with known people, friends or family. Add+ you avoid cheater, griefer and hacker.

The laptop is just idle in a docking station, and will stay online if the server is running. My main computer has nothing to to do with the laptopserver.

So yeah, than there is no problem. Follow the instructions you were given and go for it.
Use the right command to download and install the files with anonymous login to Steam.

Does it use Steam networks or must you be able to port forward?
