Yeah for first timers selfhosting is often a little bit difficult, but I host currently 3 gameservers for our little group. Astroneer / Stationeers / StarsEnd
Astroneer is the easiest one and Stationers is more or less standard but StarsEnd is a little bit more pain in the butt.
Any hints or configs you adjust to make it run good?

Well, if not then ask yourself how should another group or clan member play if you shutdown your desktop or notebook?
Dedicated server normally runs 24/7 and gives access to all players allowed to use it as playground.
There are many small or medium groups out there who prefer to play only with known people, friends or family. Add+ you avoid cheater, griefer and hacker.
So yeah, than there is no problem. Follow the instructions you were given and go for it.
Use the right command to download and install the files with anonymous login to Steam.
