At most it's a multiplayer game, like ark, conan exiles, etc.
You can play it single player. The game even offers a super easy way to start up a dedicated server right from the main menu. Then you can join the dedicated server running on your computer. I haven't seen any lag from playing on the same computer that's hosting the server (with some games, this is a huge issue). Make sure you put a password on it!!
What you decide to do in single player is up to you. I have 128+ hours and ALL of it has been single player. I saw the reports of massive cheating and hacking going on and skipped ALL multiplayer aspects of the game.
I spend a lot of time exploring the map, sticking my nose into weird corners of the map (and nearly getting it shot off), and grinding to make vehicles and expand my base. It's kept me entertained. Got my money back on the entertainment value already. I haven't even really engaged with the tower defense angle either. You can build a layer of traps and turrets to mow down attacking enemies. But it's not automatic like 7 days to die. You actually have to build a structure to summon an attack. So they leave that up to you or not.
Oh, and you can "tame" followers. It's a system they're still working on. They just added random skill to the NPC's, and they have plans to improve that system a lot. There are some cool units. My favorite is a "Patrol Sergeant" which is a fascist looking guy in a trenchcoat with a dual engine jetpack on his pack (he flies, oh yes he does), and a _mini-gun_ on top of each jetpack engine. Dual mini-guns. Such sweet words. He basically follows me as a flying turret. Anything hits me, he chews them to shreds with the mini-guns. It's hilarious to watch (and his shots draw agro to him).
