The beach in the middle, where you can start, should be ok too, perhaps a little too small.
Where I am now I have decided that it is temporary, I have found another flatter place. It is located under the M14 quadrant slip along the coast.
- as mentioned flat land is ideal and can be dealt with by using levels. However sometimes there are areas which are relatively flat, let's you place your foundations, then when you go to place your walls, there's going to be one or 2 spots where a quarter inch of your screen for comparison cannot be built on.
- I like to be near a source of water so you can pump a watering system for crop plots.
- be somewhere far enough out of range of Imperial compounds and other enemy POI's so you don's get any surprise visits
- near a road is ideal not for just for ground vehicle transportation but makes for easy placing of air vehicles for taking off and landing
- being near mines is handy in terms of convenience especially an iron mine
- something centrally located is not a bad idea, provides relatively equal travel to everything around you
- a fairly large piece of land, this will allow you to build a large enough defense maze for the Spacetime Beacon Attacks. (Reason why I just recently moved)
Not always going to find all criteria in every location so may have to go with the majority of your wants and needs check list ticked off.
I just completed a base relocation, have a few more trips to transfer stuff over, then tear down what's left of old location.
But I wanted to add that you want a nearby forest too, as you'd need inordinate amounts of wood for resin and carbon powder used in production of higher level mats.
This is needed to a larger degree than nearby mines, as the the (large) mineshaft covers raw ore need to a significant degree.
Fiber is needed is large quantities too, but at least it's farmable.
