As a game, it's not... As an AC, it is
Like Bigshow said. I guess mostly the purists are lowering the overall rating.
Second...
DFM. DFM everywhere. You just can't get rid of this system, especially the ones tagged "TGT_LEAD". Classic AC missile shoot on it won't work, for a lifetime. Hence, that one is scripted. You just have to deal with it.

Sounds like a cheat mod but believe me it really isn't. On higher difficulties enemy pilotes can easily counter-maneuver this tactic and trash your plane.
Wow, I almost bought this piece of sheet
It IS a plain bad design.
This game is what introduced me to the Ace Combat series, and since then I've also played Ace Combat 5 and Ace Combat Zero (two amazing games that have aged pretty well in terms of gameplay).
The DFM mode by itself is not bad, and some dogfights caused by it are entertaining to play. It also makes the machine guns on the planes FAR more useful than in previous entries. The only problem here is that the game relies on the DFM mode too much, and at time, using the DFM mode can feel repetitive.
I would also remove the missions where you control the gunner of the black hawk. Those are pointless and drag on for too long. However, I would keep the bomber, the AC-130 and the Apache missions, because they're really solid too.
i really didnt mind that, seeing as im used to both games set in both fictional and real/semi real world settings. as long as they have real world names for vehicles/weapons and not some weird ass ♥♥♥♥ like asak47 for the name of a ak74 XD point is...i treated it like i treated AC3 *being the first of the series i played* and after a while, found myself enjoying it, cave for a few missions that annoyed the crap out of me. was really hoping theyd take another crack at it, but it seems the fantards got what they wanted and its back to strangereal......and back to the silly anime esqe stories. other than AC04, which i like for both gameplay and story *the planes have friction and weight to them* the rest of the games *ac5 onwards* i just play for the gameplay. cause it seemed like after 5 they just wrote some of anything and called it a story.
TLDR this is no more jarring than AC3 after coming from AC2, specially how namco handled the japanese and US/EU releases
