Is the beginning supposed to be boring?
I love Icewind dale and the game mechanic is amazing but Baldurs Gate has always made me quit because of how boring the beginning is. I met 2 companions at a castle and went to a big town so far but the story and the lack of quests is so boring! Is the rest of the game more of the same or is it worth the struggle and becomes better later on?

Seems you've tried to rush through the game. After meeting Imoen, you meet the first two companions at Crossroads (area AR2700). The castle you refer to is Friendly Arm Inn. You can get multiple side-quests there as well as in Beregost (the "big" town you seem to refer to). Keep in mind that you should focus on traveling to Nashkel, because there is a time limit for that quest. You may also roam freely and discover many quest givers in the surround areas.

Since you didn't comment on "the story" at all, I cannot comment on that.
Icewind dale compared to BG has HUGE deficit in story, the quests (about 5x less and less variety), dialogues, number of areas and freedom, no NPC and their interactions, romances... Generally it is inferior RPG game overall in most aspects, just tuned a lot more toward combat/action game.

To each his own.

But the dialog in Baldurs Gate is crap so i see no point in continuing!
