Mr Lich, are you kidding me!?
So, I'm playing through the DLC Siege of Dragonspear and I come across a Lich. I won't go into any spoilers but needless to say he was quite an annoying hurdle.

At the start of the fight he seemed to cast MULTIPLE spells, I think he had two simultaneous Chain Contingencies.

He went from totally defenseless to having (at the first second of the first round) Stoneskin, Fireshield Fire version, Fireshield Cold version, Protection from Magical weapons, Protection from missiles, and Shield.

Now, I cheesed him hardcore. I died the first time because nothing, literally nothing hurt him, the second time around I hasted my assassin, had her use poison weapon, and got a backstab off before his contingencies. He died to poison because it goes through stoneskin. I used summoned monsters to keep the dude busy, because he's got power word stun, cloudkill, and all manner of annoying things.

So, How are you SUPPOSED to beat him?

Does Breach work to remove his protections? He was entirely immune to dispel magic and remove magic it seemed. Spell Thrust?

Did you use The Secret Revealed when fighting him?

While fighting him, did you send one character to fetch the phylactery?

Yes, Breach is one spell to break his protection spells. To remove his Shield, something else is needed I think. Secret Word, Spell Thrust among the lower level spells.

His Phylactery is behind a locked door that cannot be picked. The key is on the lich's person so you have to kill him, grab the key, get the phylactery, and run it over to the place where it's destroyed before he respawns.

What is the secret revealed? I picked up a few books, but the books were just hints about the phylactery and how to become/kill liches or notes on the process.

I looked it up and Liches are immune to 5th level and lower spells, so breach would not have done anything, and secret word would not remove anything that the lich had applied to himself. He didn't have spell immunity, he just was racially immune

Okay, I looked up what the secret revealed was.

I was under the assumption that he had to be dealt with then and there. I didn't realize I had the option of returning to him later with this item. Now I see it wasn't SUPPOSED to be that difficult. I knew there was something obvious I missed

Not true.

Trust me. I've played SOD often enough to not make up such ideas. The first thing I do is to send my thief into the backroom while the others fight the Lich.

It's a special item you receive from Brother Deepvein, if you explore this dungeon carefully, then report back to him about what you've discovered before entering the Lich's chamber.

Are you certain? I just played it last night. I tried to go into the door (secret door, had to be spotted first) and it said "LOCKED". So I tried to pick it, and it said "This door cannot be picked"

Or maybe my lockpick wasn't high enough... I'm going to try again tonight at my save, just to try a few other options.
The secret door is locked and can be picked or opened with the key.

The first time I fought Gurn Coldheart, I wasn't fast enough to destroy the phylactery and had to fight him a second time. Whether he turns into a full Lich with all innate immunities there may be, I don't know. I've never looked at internal monster stats before. Maybe I've wasted one or two Breach spells indeed or it was my Inquisitor's Dispel Magic ability that worked at the same time plus The Secret Revealed. Or maybe it took four rounds for his PfMW to end, but I guess he would have caused some damage meanwhile.

I think, had I not had the item for him, I'd give Minsc dual weilding maces the belt of antipode + Fire resistance. Have him wait for Protection from magic items to wear off while keeping the dude busy with a summoned skeleton to avoid all his stuns and cloudkill nonsense, and then have minsc rage and run in. That might work.

Doors that are impossible for anyone to pick give a different message--"This door is warded against magic and the lock is too complex to be picked by normal means," or something like that.

This is easy fight, use this item on him, boom then he dies in 10 seconds, pick door or open with key you looted from his body. Do puzzle fast, so he does not get revived. Run with box to fire room and burn it. Then mission is done. You might fight him another one or two times. Still easy fight even on insane

Yes, it is an easy fight, if you have the item, which I did not.

I fought him head on, and you know what, I beat him. I legitimately beat a lich at party level 8, so there

I do not recall this fight. either I missed it or It wasn't difficult.

Clicks internet search.

Oh right. that quest the dwarves wouldn't give me the item or something so I killed them. then I gave the item to the Lich cuz he wanted it. and well I was carrying them and didn't really see any other use for them and went on my way.

Damn dwarves Told them he was a Lich and they attacked me. the hell was the scripting here?

I went back and I ended up drinking a potion of master thievery, pickpocketing them for the necklaces, returning the necklaces to the lich, getting his reward, and then murdering him with the item, and getting MORE rewards from the dwarves

Hu, now that is a nice way of doing it :D
Didn't think pickpocketing the necklaces was possible, got to try it the next time ;)

Nicely done BlueFox. I pickpocketed the necklaces too and then killed the lich after haha. Yea it just takes multiple casts of Breach and Secret Word/ Spell Thrust to actually Wizard Chess (what I call mage buffing and debuffing) liches. Breach takes out Fireshield and Stoneskin and Secret Word for Globe and Spell Turning. Liches are usually solo so Breach, Breach into "Go for the eyes Boo!" beatdown usually works. If they have Improved Invisibility first then you have to True Sight/ Oracle/ Detect Invisibility to be able to target them with spells. Later on they will have Spell Trap which is very good and annoying, which you will need to either A) waste 30 levels of spells on to break or B) Ruby Ray or Pierce Shield. Just read what they Contingency when the fight starts and then debuff accordingly.

Why, he's so cute tiny little devil with his pink flames of death. Just kill the other dwarves, they're boring.
