Yea, where is the first mage that can join your party?
Early Mages you can find include Xzar (found along the path to the Friendly Arm Inn), Edwin (found in Nashkel on the bridge to the South-East of the map, he will require you to accept a quest from him), Dynaheir (imprisioned in the Gnoll Stronghold, is part of an NPC pair with Minsc) and it is also possible to dual-class Imoen into a Thief/Mage (you must level her up at least once as a thief to do this).
Even with a mage, most of them will require a scroll to learn Identify (can be bought from High Hedge) and of those listed above Edwin cannot learn Identify (due to his Conjourer class/kit).
Also if you do choose to dual-class Imoen, I'd suggest having knock spells for both her and Dynheir, and a find traps spell in Jaheira's. Then just send in your beefiest (mines my MC Cavalier Paladin for example) and just set off the traps. You really won't miss out on that much experience overall, especially because you can save a lot of the locked chests, doors, etc for later when Imoen is high enough level to gain her theif abilities back.
yeah you could grab neera or garrick in beregost. you could hunt anklegs up north of the friendly arm in, and bring the shells down to beregost to sell for 500 gold each, thats 5 identifys. money isn't an issue if you do that.
I mean I would do that run to the temple and use their expensive heals and still make a gain in money.
