Dungeons & Dragons game :)
dungeons and dragons games are played with pens and paper. dice and figures and graph paper. imagine about 4-7 of your best friends sitting out in your garage or in your basement around 6pm on a Friday evening drinking beer and eating chips and just using your imaginations. Your Dungeon Master would control the game and set the mood while the others would playout their charaters or avatars if you will. Everything was basically random rolls on dice from 3,4,5,6,7,8,10,20 sided dice....yes a die with 20 sides ! Playing for hours and hours.... People had to read actual manuals and player handbooks and their wasn't any thing like cheat codes and such........Ah brings back great memories.

This game and others ( computer ) and boardgames all have decended from the circa 1970's games of D&D that were pen and paper and dice. So all have similar styles.

This is based on a variant of the D&D rules, called Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (AD&D). Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2, and Icewind Dale 2, are using D&D rules, whilst Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, and Icewind Dale 1, use AD&D rules.

Its an RPG game that is based around a D&D rule set. Many actions you and your opponents take in the game are based on a die roll (you don't normally see these rolls except in specific circumstances).
It's really a shame that they didn't put the D&D rules in the game manual like was in the original. It helped to explain a lot of things if you had never played D&D before. Just remember that a low AC is good... go for negative numbers.

Armor Class and Thac0 are both explained in the BGEE manuals.

Vinilux if you are interested in learning more about many of the ways the game operates you can check them out the game manuals (for free) here

I own the original, retail version of Baldur's Gate. For your benefit, I will copy the introduction from the game manual which came with that game (from back when game manuals were awesome, and were nearly books in their own right):

Welcome to Baldur's Gate!

Now that you've cracked open the box and are ready to slip that first CD into your computer, it seems like a good time to say welcome to Bauldur's Gate and the AD&D 2nd Edition electronic game world.

Right now there's probably two questions running through your mind - what's this AD&D 2nd Edition thing and who's the guy writing this anyway?

Baldur's Gate is a huge and varied computer role-playing game - but the game didn't happen out of thing air. Baldur's Gate uses the AD&D 2nd Edition rules, the oldest and most popular game rules in the paper-and-pen world. This isn't just any role-playing game, this is the granddaddy of them all.

So who am I? Well, somebody had to write the 2nd Edition rules back in '89 and I and some lucky souls were entrusted with that job. Back then, we were creating strictly for the paper-and-pencil, sit-around-the-table, face-to-face game. There was [little] consideration to the needs of a computer game. Sure, it was something we had all thought about, but there was too much to do to spend time worrying about it - not that we knew how we would accomplish it anyway.

How times change. Now, almost ten years later, I'm sitting on the other side, making computer games - and I'm amazed at what Baldur's Gate has done. Baldur's Gate brings the AD&D game alive on the computer like no other game before it - and that's no small task! It is a testament to the depth and richness of the AD&D system that even today's computers are challenged to capture the entire range of flexibility allowed within the AD&D game, and it is a testament to Baldur's Gate that it contains so much of that richness.

Still, face-to-face games don't have a computer for a Dungeon Master. Computers can't make judgement calls (and would you want one to?). That means there are some changes that couldn't be avoided. Even in these changes though, Baldur's Gate is true to the spirit of AD&D gaming. We wanted both experiences, paper and electronic, to be equally fun.

Really, this introduction is to thank you for playing our game. You playing - and having fun - is what this is all about.

And I hope you do.

thank you all for the information an the guides.
have you noticed? Nowadays it's a lot less requent that games come with a nice guide book with all the explanations wee detailed.
In the old days games used to come with a coloured instructional book with a very detailed information about everything. Now, you are lucky if it has a guide book.
It feels like companies made games with lots of love for gaming consumers and they made games like gamers and not like businessmen.

This game has 2 manuals installed on your hard drive. They are really good reading and the one is long and extrememely thorough. Located at C:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\baldurs gate enhanced edition\manuals
