This is a STUPID mechanic!
Thing about companions returning to FAI is actually not a thing, heh. Some mods do make them do that, also three of beamdog's companions do it as well.
As for original BG, Im not sure which allies moved to FAI, but I specifically recall thinking it was silly how many remained there during my game.. It is possibly that I manually dismissed them there though, I genuinely cannot recall.
Recruited him when I rescued him and added to the party. I left Branwen (IIRC) in his cell. Took him topside and dismissed him outside the entrance building. Went back down and snagged Branwen. Went back topside. and swapped them out again.
Extra work I know but no one gets lost this way.
Yeslick is apparently not in BG2 (which I have never played before), so I feel less annoyed by the loss
afaik this actually *should NOT* work, bc the outdoor area of the mine changes after the flooding. havent tested it, so could be wrong.
