Access or create a Folder called Portraits
Save portrait images for your main character here as well as NPC portraits if you want them.
If you want to replace NPC portraits you have to do a few things to make it work.
I'll use Imoen as an exmaple.
After saving/downloading the images you want to use, create 3 BMP files of those portraits for Imoen at different sizes.
One with dimensions 210 x 330 name this image IMOENL
One with dimensions 169 x 266 name this image IMOENM
And one with dimensions 54 x 86 name this image IMOENS
Repeat this with portraits for every character you wish to change, albeit by using the appropriate character's name.
MINSCL
VICONIAS
JAHEIRAM etc etc
I've been using BG2 portraits for Imoen, Jaheira, Minsc and Viconia in BG1 for a long time and never had issues.
But you can use any image really, so long as the images are saved as BMP files, the dimensions are correct and are named appropriately it should work.
I think there are other ways of making this work as well but this is the only one i've used personally and if you do it right it should work for you.
Can also confirm the replaced portraits work in the expansion SoD as well.
If you wish to use non BG2 portraits to replace NPC portraits then you must also copy those images into a Portraits folder in the Baldur's Gate II - Enhanced Edition folder in your documents as well to continue using them in BG2.
You will only need one 210 x 330 portrait for your main character though so make sure that's available in the portrait folders of both games.
simple please?

You can find a ton of the official game ones here.. if not all of them.

Just save the images to your computer, I advise putting .bmp at the end of the file name though so the portraits are saved as BMP files which I know the game recognises.
Otherwise they'll probably be saved as WEBP files, which was the default file I got when testing and I do not know if they will work in that format.
Most of the portraits appear to be in 210 x 330 too which is great for player portraits so you won't need to resize them unless you want to use any of them to replace NPC portraits.
am i just meant to click on the little portrait on the page you linked?
ty
i unzip something somewhere?
Yes, the portraits on the website I linked are from the the games.
Just click on them/open them in a new tab and save them to your computer as BMP files by simply adding .bmp to the end of the file name.
You can save them directly into the portraits folder or move them there later, it doesn't matter which.
had a bit of luck with the Nexus options but im missing the Gallery of Heroes 2 update on the fandom site you suggested. I can copy them to the folder but they dont show up in-game.
(the embarrassing thing is im enjoying this)
edit: i think if you can help get me the Gallery of Heroes stuff I can do the rest.
(or is it a 7z file? something like that. sweet portraits i must have them :)
There are 6 portraits from the Gallery of Heroes 2 DLC on that site I linked, I'm not familiar with this pack though so I have no idea if there are supposed to be more.
I dunno where you're saving the images on your computer but you should be able to move them in the portraits folders easily.
