TL;DR Version: If you time it right, and go to another room or floor of the same building as soon as the leaving character initiates dialogue you can still keep your companion without worrying about the party pooper chasing you down.

And I love cutting my way through the Gnoll fortress with Neera and her Sleep spell, which Dynaheir cannot cast.
