My Mage Can't Learn Protection From Petrification

I've bought the scroll from various different magic shops, but he can't learn the spell from any of them. He's a regular mage, so he should be able to learn any spell. I've had this problem with Neera before. Half the time she can learn it; half the time she can't.

Never had my own character not able to learn it. You devs really need to fix some of these messes.

hmmm have you checked his int check vs spell difficulty? to my knowledge mages can learn any spells but also have a limit on what spells they can posses and write but that may be wrong. Edited: this is knowledge from old game time but i think im behind since my nearly year hiatus
I mean limit as in lvl limit, every spell has a casting level which might be the explanation for your mage, and it should be noted that you might just fail at scribing the spell it happens, thank the RNG for that. XD

His intelligence is 17 and protection from petrification is a first level spell. It's one of the 1st spells I tried to have him learn, so we could go into the basilisk area for some serious experience early in the game. This is the EE version of the game where scribing never fails, but my mage never even makes the attempt.

The scroll sits there looking like it's a scroll from an opposing school of magic, but my mage is a fighter/mage/thief a general purpose mage.

This is wierd. I recruited Neera into the group to see if she could learn the spell. She could, and did. I then removed another copy of the spell, and NOW my mage can learn it.

They really need to improve this game version.

Couple of questions:

1. Do you have any mods installed
2. Is it the same exact scroll every time, or a different one
3. Does the scroll have a blue spell icon on it, or a green icon

If you also have a saved game where the issue is persisting, zip it up and send it to [e-mail] and I'll take a look to see if we can reproduce it on our end.

No mods. It's the blue scroll, not the green protection scroll. However, I may have made a mistake while creating the character. For some reason I set the intelligence to 17 not 18 like I usually do when I'm rolling a mage. I would suspect that I might have gone over my limit of level 1 spells.

The only thing is when I recruited Neera I had 4 copies of protection from petrification in my scroll case. When I pulled one out to hand it to her, it was a plain scroll. After she memorized it I went back in the scroll case, and now the spell was lined in green, meaning I could now scribe it.

Check if your spell limit is not capped. If it is so, you gotta go to spell level page, right click a undesired spell, and erase it.
