leaving imoen behind
hello!

this is my current party composition at lvl 3/4 and im planning to do a full trilogy run:

1) charname sorcerer
2) kagain tank
3) misc dps / tank
4) neera utility mage
5) imoen thief mage (should dual class at 5)
6) viconia cleric

however i just found Coran which is the best ranged dps in the game and there's no reason to keep imoen since i already have 2 mages in the party and shes also pretty weak overall..

what would i lose story wise? is she important for the main story? i know you meet her again in bg2 but that's it

She's not important at all in BG1, you can ditch her and you wont miss anything story wise.

Imoen doesn't really become important to the story until Throne of Bhaal - the was a late-game addition to BG1 to provide the party with an early good aligned thief (thus the lack of dialogue) and she was supposed to permanently leave the party in BG2 (thus the lack of dialogue).

thank you! i'll just leave her at that bridge :D

I do the same, Coran is ace, in fact, I leave Imoen in the Friendly Arm Inn next to a table so at least she can get a beer.

BUT! looking at your Party composition, I would keep Imoen, Dual Class her to a mage, and ditch Neera. Imoen Trumps Neera 100% as a mage thief

i think neera is a bit stronger as wild mage, she has only 5% chance for wild surge casting normal spells and she has the spell slots of a specialist without banned schools

also when u get enough surge protection u can cast higher level spells mostly for free

imoen as a mage needs a lot of time to get going and i need a mage right now :P

to conclude, getting Coran at level 3 lets you shape him better with traps and locks skills

Fair enough but you know, I don't like surges - especially when you money vanishes or you get instantly killed by a stupid cow or some crap. You need a mage for what though? All you need is archers really in Chapter 4... and Coran fits that bill best!

yea archers are really op in bg1, but i like playing with at least 2 mages to disable, dispel nuke etc

right now my charname sorceror is kinda weak at level 3 so he really needs a colleague :D

maybe when he's strong enough I'll ditch neera and get another archer, we'll see!

BG 2 she has some decent importance and it will help if you feel more attached to her, but if that not your style/way of thinking then its a non issue overall.
(ie like if you watch movies and don't care about characters much then it fine, but if type that question why you should have cared then it might* depending how easy you can attache yourself to them)

*might because bg1 companions by default are rather minimal and require more player thought and filling (and or mods).

it is kinda hard to get attached to BG1 companions since u cant really interact with them (es talk action doesnt work) but its totally different in BG2 and i will definitely take her along there if shes important :) (shes also the only good thief in bg2 iirc)

npc banter mod is a beloved mod along with couple others that are well made and fitting if you want to improve them especially BG1.

Ya depends on person, I mean there are people easily able too (doing so even on some rouge likes/games with armies "meant"to die ie xcom) and some that straight up don't care even if they flushed out. There is still a little in Bg1 and just the feeling of her following all the way through or w/e your journey of BG1 will imo make you feel more connected (unless not type that does) still regardless with just her being there and helpful etc...

Massive Spoiler but will definitely help with your issue...

Outside the Friendly Arm in is a ring of evermemory hidden in a small cache in a tree which doubles the amount of level 1 spells you can use on Sorcs and Mages

*Me, over to the side, shamelessly using both.*
