Unexpected Advantage of Fighter/Mage/Thief
Just for fun I started one, an elven fighter/mage/thief, thinking he'd be a real light weight. Turns out he has more starting hit points than any other character I've ever played. He starts with 15 hit points, and i quickly got his armor class up to -3.

The deal is, and this wasn't in the original Baldur's Gate, he gets to create his familiar immediately. The familiar has 12 hit points, and half those are added to the player's total. For at least the first third of the game about the only thing the mage is going to be doing is IDing stuff. The rest of the time it'll be plate mail and long sword. By level 4 he should be up to 42 hit points, almost as many as a regular 4th level fighter.

By then, with a robe of the good archmage, dexterity bonus, +1 shield, +2 ring, and the claw of Kasgorath (that may drop him down to 38 hit points) he should be AC-3 and able to cast spells in that outfit.

Interesting. He'd be more like a battle mage than the wimp most people imagine when they hear the word mage.

Actually it's better to make a half elf fighter/mage/thief. The extra constitution point starts him at 16 hit points, and gets him up to 46 by level 4. With Archmage robe, +2 ring, +1 shield, and claw of Kasgorath, he should end up with 42 hit points at AC-4, AND able to cast spells while so armored.

Haerovon's guide. He's pretty much FMT all the way (at least he was in his BG2 guide)

http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/663933-baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition/faqs

Very good explanations of what he does, why he does it and all the nice stats they have. Or dont. Most people only need the first sections for character idea's, and can ignore the rest of the guide if they want.

His play style err's on the safe and reliable approach and works well for the first run through. He intentionally avoids what I'd call the more 'fun' aspects of the game like certain explosive items on my kensai in BG2 (just put on a couple of rings of fire resistance.....).

Definately worth a read (I actually forgot what his BG1 guide is like as I only remember mostly his BG2 one, and BG1 for me is a nobrainer anyway) if only to get in on a few tidbits you might have missed.

He's now fighter 9. mage 10, thief 11. Has 126 hit points, armor class -7, and swinging the Blade of Roses (THAC0 4 two attacks/round). This is in BG2 of course.

that multi class is prop the most powerful in the BG games since 1: they can do all roles effectivly. 2: has access to most mage spells in the game and so allowing him to be allmost immortal during combat unless u get dispelled (unlikly) and 3 if u are having trouble with mobs u can just run stealth back stab and repeat and it works ever time (for me any way)

Yeah I was thinking to roll that too, BUT that toon will not get 9th levels spells or any feats for that mater.

Edit: After reading up on the matter looks like you can get feats with that character, anyway let me know when you get there.
