How Many Wisdom Tomes?

I've heard the figure 3 mentioned, but I've never found more than 2. One in the vaults under Candlekeep, one in Durlag's tower. Anyone know of a third? I'm playing a cleric, so the better the wisdom the better the cleric.

You'll get one while performing a quest for the Temple of Umberlee in Baldur's Gate, but you must turn it in to complete the quest. Or else you die.

You can keep the third one, if you're tricky.

Tell the priestess you want to see the scroll before you hand over the tome. Then just tell her, too bad I'm keeping it/don't have it. Everybody in the temple will turn hostile, but if you win the fight you get to keep the tome.

With the 3 tomes, its possible to have 21 Wisdom, which allows for 3 extra first level spells, 3 extra second level, 2 extra third, 3 extra fourth, and 1 extra fifth level spell, which is just a ton of spells. Too bad wizards get no such bonuses from high intelligence.

The only quest I know of involving the temple of Umberlee is when you go there to retrieve the kid's dead body. Is there another quest?

It's in Baldur's Gate itself. You should run into Marek and Lothander, who tell you to stay out of the way. You'll run into Lothander later, who will tell you that you have been poisoned. He is under a Geas (a powerful charm-like spell) and will help you with the cure if you help him remove the Geas, which involves getting the tome and giving it to the temple of Umberlee.

It's been a while, so I'm a bit fuzzy on specifics, but my the character I've been playing the most is on his way to Baldur's Gate right now.

I recall that from long ago (1990's). You had to get some mage's book of curses, the mage on the ship/den of iniquity. I think I did a real fast run through of the rest of Baldur's Gate, got the tomes under Candlekeep, then saved and exported the character to BG2.

He survived, so there you have another way of beating the curse. I get that book of curses just about every playthrough. It's just below the twin 'death worshippers' with their gloves of ogre strength, which is definitely worth getting.

The book you're talking about is not one of the stat tomes. It's for a quest given by Brialbera in the NE district.

Marek and Lothander poison you offscreen, and from the moment that they talk to you the second time in the central section, you have 10 in-game days to either beat the game (the poison doesn't move over to BG2) or get cured.

It's perfectly easy to get the wisdom tome from this - followers of Umberlee are pretty evil anyway, and wiping out all of the priestesses incurs no penalties to your reputation.

So, if I just walk in on this temple and slaughter everyone, will one of the bodies have the tome?

To answer my own question, no. Killed them all, and just found a batch of nonmagical quarterstaffs. Worth a try anyway.

I hate fighting clerics and druids. Never have a single useful thing on them.
