Multiplayer explained?
Hello can I get co-op explained? If I start a game solo and then a friend decides to jump in, will he be advancing in his own story or just mine?

Unless they changed it for the EE, there's only one protagonist (the host). The others are just along for the ride.

So if other people are along for the ride in my game, will their progress save and be there the next time they play in my server? Can you go a little more in depth on this system please?

Exporting will allowed you to Import the character your exported and all of his gear into whatever game you want. If you, say, picked up a longsword in your game, unless you Exported your character you won't keep that longsword. That is, unless you save the game and load that save. If you load the save it'll reset to the character when you saved, but you can always swap him out to the exported character.

Exporting is pretty much a save slot for your character. To do this, go to your character sheet and click the Export button.

There's no progress for them (quest wise). Their progress is your progress. Only the host is the protagonist. So, if you host a game and you are at the final boss, they will be at the final boss when they join and you load the game.

For example. You started the game from scratch with your friend. You both just got out of the first dungeon. Then, the next day, you decide to play alone (note that multiplayer saves and singleplayer saves are kept separate) and you progress to chapter 3, the next time your friend joins you, he will be in chapter 3 with you as well. Treat your friend as an ordinary NPC, if you will. For the game, only the host's (your) progress matter. Also, he will not be able to use his save to play his character alone if you are the host because he will not be the protagonist on that save.

So whats the point for my friends if they cant actually progress? Can they export their characters that they're using while playing in my hosted game and be able to progress that way?

They can export, but they need to start the game again.
There's no "point" other than you have a friend with you instead of a generic NPC. I still don't know what kind of progress you are talking about. Story wise, they progress with you. Character wise they level up just like you. The only thing they can't do is be the protagonist.

Perhaps this will make it clearer:
If they drop out of the game, and you keep playing, they characters don't drop with them. They stay on your party and you can now control them just like regular NPCs. When you save and quit, everything you did with their characters will be there the next time you load. When they join your game next time, they will see their characters as they were at the time YOU saved, not at the time they quit.

Did this help you understand how the system works?

On a side note, I can't believe this post is almost 10 years old already, but I'm glad it's still useful for people.

This post is older than my son, who turns ten later this year, and I've ended up here because he loves D&D and has been begging me to play Baldur's Gate 💙. Thanks for your explanation!

This makes me feel old. hehehe (I'm 41 now). I'm happy for you and your son and even more happy he is insisting on playing this gem of a game. Hope he enjoys it. You are welcome =D
