Stealing and being caught
When you get caught stealing and the guards are called do they stay in the area for good in the game world or disappear after X amount of time? I use Imoen to steal and usually vanish when guards are called. Up until now there hasn't really been much concern for getting caught except i've been caught in a place where I will eventually hand a quest in. If I get caught by these guards they won't take a bribe or 200g and will attack. I lose a lot of rep and if I fight them I lose a lot more(Like 10 rep) so i'm a bit cautious now not knowing if they'll move along after a few hours or days.

Try casting a panic spell on them. Then leave after they run screaming. Once dispersed they should remain that way. I do that a lot when I return to Baldur's Gate when the Flaming Fist is after me. It enables me to move around halfway freely, and not to worry about seeing my rep go up in smoke because I killed a few.

Hey.

There are a few ways around tripping the alarm in the first place that are relatively easy to do:

1. You can knock out anyone in the area by equipping only fists (on non-monks) and attacking. The person will turn Red but you will not lose any reputation so long as you don't kill them with weapons. Fists can only damage to a minimum of 1 damage, at which point the target is knocked unconcious and therefore can't summon the guards.

2. The alarm is only summoned once the container (usually a locked one), is OPENED. That being said, you can use Imoen to go through an area and unlock all of the chests and disarm all of the traps, then send in a Cleric with the Sanctuary spell. Sanctuary is basically an invisibility spell that does not go away until you attack. That means you can open chests and steal without it disappearing like hide in shadows or normal invisibility. Sanctuary is one of the best level 1 cleric spells, so you should be taking it anyway unless you need lots of healing at lower levels.

you generally get a surplus of funds in this game. considering you can haul ankleg shells to town and get 500 for them.

if you donate to a temple your rep will rise to a maximum of 18.

http://baldursgate.wikia.com/wiki/Reputation#Ways_to_change_reputation

So even if you do take a REP hit you can recover it by paying cash.

Managing REP is important as maybe you want to use Dorn and he'd leave at 19 REP. so I kill a random CIV, maybe donate some funds to even out the REP damage.

I know this is quite the necro, but I thought I would amend this a bit. I just tried using sanctuary to get the ring upstairs in the candlekeep inn where the guy is standing there. As soon as I opened the unlocked container the guards showed up. So the sanctuary trick unfortunately doesn't work. Alternatively you can try using the lvl 1 arcane spell Charm Person on the potential witness. If you charm them they don't call the guards.

The sanctuary trick worked in the previous iteration of the IE games, and I think in the release version of the EE. I wouldn't be surprised if they patched it, the killjoys that they are.

I know they patched lots of similar glitches (like the infamous potion-swap glitch)
