Defense against fear/confusion/chaos/charm?
It seems like whenever I fight a mage or a sirine, they cast a spell, and boom, half my party or more are wandering around hitting each other, or paralyzed, or something else. It is very annoying.

I've discovered Yeslick's dispel ability works, but that's after the fact, and if he gets charmed, it's not much help. What am I doing wrong?

If you can cast lvl 3 spells, send the tank alone vs the mage, he will use fear/confusion/chaos/charm, and then, cast dispel magic with your mage, it will work with most of the effects.

You're letting spellcasters finish their spells. No, really.
Try sending Yeslick toe-to-toe with spellcaster (dwarves gain extra Saving Throws based on their CON) and have rest of your group pelt the spellcaster with arrows, bullets and Magic Missiles.

If that doesn't work, try summoning some fodder creatures and let them take the spells (Animate Dead is good one, undead creatures are immune to Fear & Confusion spells).
Thanks, I'll try that. What about in the rare occasion when there are multiple mages? I suppose the idea is just to either find a way to absorb/dispel the magic, kill the mage(s) before they get the spell off, or some combination of the above.

I just finished BG1 (what an underwhelming ending--even the final battle was underwhelming), but I'd imagine BG2 has a lot higher-level mages!
you ll surely find a lot of mages in BG2, most with insane protections, so for a newbee, the real challenge is finding the right spells to break these protections
hostile mages in BG2 don t rely as much on confusion/fear etc, they always cast other things first, so, in a way, you have plenty of time to cast defensive spells before you go cuckold

liches dont need to scare you off, they just stop time...
there are potions and spells you can cast from your own mages and or clerics if i remember correctly. Not sure about wands. Also many types of armor and weapons may also contain resistance to fear.....do not sell off everything you find out there, you may need it later.
One good summon for this is the skeletal warrior you get with Animate Dead (level 3 cleric spell and level 5 mage spell). They are immune to every mind effecting spell (charm, confusion, etc) and also even have some magic resistance.

good point. You don't always have to take on a mage with your own characters, let the mage waste his/her spells on some cheap summoned monsters. Also this works for setting off traps you cannot disarm by running them into the traps suicidal.
