Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition

I hate Durlag's Tower.
Not fun. Tedious. The other quests in Tales of the Swordcoast were fun but pretty light on content. The tower is heavy on content and not fun. At all. And what's with that chess board crap? Trying to be clever but ending up just infuriating me.

Almost done, and at the end I'll get some useless and irrelevant reward, complete my quests for piddly experience, and none of it will matter because the game will be over anyway.

Oh well. I'm sure Throne of Bhaal is a much better add-on when I get to BG2. (I hope it's nothing like Durlag's Tower!)

jesse, once you start the dungeon in throne of bhaal, you ll realise you miss durlags tower...

the extensions in BGs were not...fantastic, throne of bhaal is worse than tosc

now thats just my opinion, but i ve played both BGs ten times and, never finished bg2 even once(last chapter is just silly but 90% of the game is really good so not a problem)

a least lore in ToSC is ok

ToB is kinda stupid, it s all about fireworks and resurrection, no fun, the dungeon in it well, ...i hope you love fighting demons, lots of demons, hope you like running back and forth, hope you like boredom

if ToSC is a six then ToB is a four and a half

Ha, great! It's a shame, because ToB is part of the storyline. I could have skipped ToSC, but it sounds like I have to play ToB if I want the full story. Or I guess I can just quit when I want and read a summary of the rest on-line or watch youtube videos. :P

I think I'm through the crappy part of ToSC now. Seems like the chess thing was sort of the grand finale of the obnoxious junk. The werewolf quest was fun, though, and the getting teleported to an island quest. However, if I'd paid $20 or whatever it cost when it came out in 1999, I would be pretty annoyed. :)

I agree. As much as i adore this game i just hate Durlag's Tower. Not only this place a f**king deathtrap and a waste of time, but it's also bugged. I'm stuck at where my party supose to teleport to some chessboard. Killed monsters in all 4 rooms and nothing happens.

The only reason to go there is the tome of wisdom.

The tome of wisdom is easy to reach. No need to go to the hard parts to get it.

Yeah i got it. But i wanted to complete the quest, probably wasted 7-8 hours on it :D
Watcher's Keep >>> Durlag Tower.
How could you not enjoy Durlag's Tower? Super monsters to test yourself again, lots of exp and loot, and uber traps to keep you on your toes.
I'm not a great fan of either expansion: I've played them through once so that I know I've done it but I usually skip downstairs Durlag's in BG1 and I've usually had enough of a BG2 game before the end of ToB when everything is so over the top I lose interest.
Yeah, it really does get over the top. My favorite part of all the games is really the first 90% or 95% of Baldur's Gate 1, where it's mostly just adventurers adventuring and questing. I don't know why everything has to turn into a save the entire world/universe/etc thing.

Durlags tower is ok, while it does tend to drag on, it's mostly just the annoying traps that become a bother. You have to wait for your thief to detect them, which even when standing next to it with 100 detect traps skill, can take like 5 seconds each time. I admit, the first couple floors are kind of boring, but I really like the last 2.

There was a poll on the official Baldur's Gate forums and only 2% chose ToB as their favourite part of the Baldur's Gate saga but whenever someone discusses building their first character people always pop up saying "oh no, dont't do that: this will be much stronger in ToB" so it does loom large in some people's minds. There was a thread on here where someone asked for advice on their first character and, after some suggestions of that type they said "Inquisitor looks because Carsomyr sounds great." Picking your character for BG1 because of a sword you can't get until mid-BG2.
Personally I don't recommend thinking about ToB on your first playthrough of BG1: enjoy that game for what it is and worry about ToB when you get there would be my way of doing things... But I'm also in the minority who think BG1 is a better game than BG2, so...

Horses for courses, got to say I found Durlags tower to be a really nice dungeon. Back when the game was released back in 1999 it was epic. The difficulty curb of BG1 was alot higher anyway the level cap was lower. Fighters maxing out on level 6/7 before end of the game. No character kits meaning very basic advantages to exploit, durlags tower was an elite challenge for those that had rinsed the rest of the game for some nice loot :) It did it's job back in 1999 perfectly.

Nothing at the time was coming close, the chess board is one room I quite enjoyed fighting the onslaught with aoe round up moster summons behind the pawn line.

To be honest mage/sorcerer are the end game winners if your talking TOB, alacrity combined with 5 off casting time (robe of vecna/amulet thingy) means u can basically just chain ream spells into enemies. 5x dragons breath insta casts at 10d10 dmg per hit or something stupid. basically means u can aoe bomb just about anyroom without your party lifting a finger, also it is aoe friendly to friendlies either so you can just aoe bomb over yourself. whirlwind won't even come close to that with it's 10 attacks

Temple of Helm? Do you mean Watcher's Keep in Shadows of Amn?
