prevent Kivan from leaving
I started exploring a bit before doing the Nashkel mine. With Kivan in my party, around the 42 day mark he leaves saying something to the effect of "I can't wait for you anymore, I've got business to atand to." What must I do so this does not happen?

He wants to avenge his wife's death. You need to head for the bandit camp. Documents you find in the mine will lead you to somebody in Beregost, who will in turn point towards the bandits.

Thanks!

As mentioned above, his quest is tied to the main quest. You can put off the main quest as long as you'd like but Kivan has a timer and will leave as "his" quest has not been completed.

Depending on where you are in the main story, you might not have enough time to finish his quest now. To prevent him leaving you can try either of the following:

-Kick him out of the party then recruit him right before you go to the Bandit Camp and bring him along (if there's enough time left for you to clear it with him).

-Kick him out of the party, clear the Bandit Camp and then rerecruit him afterwards.

except that kivan is the only npc that leaves permanently when you kick him out
he never waits on spot

don t kick kivan out, he ll disapear for ever

I always thought you could kick him ONCE and he would stay put but if you kick him again he leaves forever. I don't remember and I honestly never play with him.

WELL... if he can't be kicked at all then the best solution is to kill him ;]

Seriously, kill him and then resurrect him after the Bandit Camp.

(You should actually be able to just kill him and immediately resurrect him and the quest will no longer be active but I don't know if that still works in BG:EE)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I found some information after delving into the Steam forums. Apparently his time limit varies depending on what level you were when you recruited Kivan. I'll try killing him then doing the bandit camp, so I don't have to backtrack that far.

Just a little update... I went to High Hedge and recruited Kivan and repeatedly kicked him. 5 kicks and he waited on spot every time. Note that I have already cleared the Bandit Camp (but have not "finalized" it by talking to Officer Vai) so I don't know if he still perma-leaves if you kick him before that. It appears BG:EE changed it so he will at least wait on spot after the Bandit Camp is cleared (Confirmed).

i can buy that, though he always leaves and has left on every playthrough, but, i ALWAYS had viconia in the party, this could be a reason for him leaving permanently, he just hates that woman

Okay, killing him worked. I've cleared the Bandit Camp and he's staying. I did an experiment with resurrecting him before going to the camp and he left as soon as he was back to life.
