I got it to work by allowing through DEP settings

Click on the start button in the lower left.
2.Right-Click Computer and from the dropdown go to properties.
3.Click on Advanced System Settings on the right side of the window that just came up.
4.Under the Advanced tab in the section called Performance click on the Settings button.
5.Click on the tab at the top called Data Execution Prevention.
6.Click the second radio option Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select
7.The box below that is called your Exception List add the game exe to that list

This doesn't work for me. It searches for executable files, yet when I put in the Baldur's Gate exe, it still does nothing.

I try to boot the game up right for the exe and it says it's missing a file. This right after I've checked the game on steam for missing or corrupted files.

you may need to reinstall OpenAl. there is a folder in your baldurs gate directory if you look for it. Just click and reinstall OpenAl program.

Did that before, Crazed Possum, and it still doesn't work. Does it require a computer re-boot to work? If not then I have no idea what to do. The game was working like a week or two back, so wtf happened in the meantime? Steam or BG EE patch? BG2 EE doesn't work for me either.

1. what file is missing? what error message ?
2. are you using integrated graphics video chipset?
3. what version of Windows
4. what brand of video card if any?
5. desktop or laptop
6. what brand name of laptop/desktop ?

give us some more info and maybe I or someone else can help you out. There also should be a log or error dump file you can zip-up and email Beamdog and they " might " help you out.....maybe.

here is a previous post by me that may be more clear to follow than the the one posted here.

i have win 7 64 bit and it killed my game. i deleted everything. ran CCleaner to clean the registry. re-installed and shut off DEP....runs now.

turn off DEP .

1. CLICK THE START BUTTOM AT THE LOWER LEFT OF THE DESKTOP SCREEN
2. WHERE IT SAYS "SEARCH PROGRAMS AND FILES" BOX TYPE IN THERE ( SYSDM.CPL)
3.THE BOX THAT APPEARS HAS 5 TABS ACROSS THE TOP OF IT. CHOOSE (ADVANCE)
4.THE FIRST ONE LABLED (PERFORMANCE, VISUAL EFFECTS,PROCESSOR SCHEDULING,MEMORY USAGE......... CLICK THE (SETTINGS) BUTTON.
5.THERE WILL BE A LIST, BUT DON'T WORRY ABOUT THAT.....ACROSS THE TOP OF THAT WINDOW BOX ARE 3 MORE TABS. CLICK (DATA EXECUTION PREVENTION)
6.YOUR DEP SHOULD PROBABLY BE TURNED ON ALREADY.

7.Click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.

BUT NOW YOU CAN "ADD" A GAMES EXECUTION FILE (THE ONE THAT STARTS THE GAME UP) TO THE LIST SO YOU CAN THUS TURN IT OFF WHEN YOU PLAY JUST THAT GAME. YOUR GAME START FILE WILL ALMOST ALWAYS LOOK SOMETHING LIKE THIS: (RTC3.EXE) FOR RAILROAD TYCOON 3, OR ( PR2.EXE) FOR PORT ROYALE 2. IN YOUR CASE YOU WILL WANT TO ADD BALDUR'S GATE OR BGEE.EXE LOCATED IN THE BALDURS GATE DIRECTORY: C:\PROGRAM FILES (X86)\STEAM\STEAMAPPS\COMMON\BALDUR'S GATE ENHANCED EDITION\......SCROLL DOWN TO BGEE AND HIGHLIGHT IT AND ADD THE EXECUTABLE TO THE DEP LIST.....DONE.

NOTE: THIS IS IN CAPS INORDER TO SEE IT BETTER WHILE TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR COMPUTER.

Thanks, Crazed Possum. I had already done what you wrote there but for some reason it actually worked this time. I had reinstalled the game again, and had opened the OpenAl program. Now I have to do the same for BG2 EE
