It looks like he just selects the entire party and taps the very edge of the map, so it creates the single target location marker instead of one for each character.

Lol. Seriously though, I don't actually know. All I can suggest is make sure ALL characters are selected as one group and that they are close together. Tap on the edge of the map ingame. Specifically try where the road goes off the map (because not all areas of wilderness maps can be zoned from). Make sure it turns into a single icon (not the 4 separate character color icons). You can't fast travel to an area until you've discovered it (and even then you have to zone at the edge of the map).
