Yeah, the special 1 to 00 for Strength for fighter type classes carried over from Advanced D&D (aka 1st edition D&D). Second edition managed to streamline some things but it was still a far, far cry from the beauty of 5th edition.
IMO 3.5's the best edition for D&D. 5th is too streamlined with proficiency bonus and the power curve is too flat. Honestly I prefer 2nd Ed. to 5th, even if things like the ability bonuses are incredibly messed up.
3.5 was very nice I have to agree.
