Candlekeep purhcases
This is my first playthrough. I am running a Dwarven fighter/cleric. I have completed all of the sidequests in Candlekeep and am ready to depart. What should I be purchasing at the inn before I go?

A helmet, Splint Mail no idea what weapons you are using or if you plan on dual wielding. BG1 I prefer to use a weapon and shield until I get max pips in weapons I use and at least 3 pips in Dual weapon style.
Hey. Fighter/cleric means blunt weapons only. You're stuck with the cleric weapon ethos. Depending on preferences e.g. staff /single weapon + shield/ dual wield + blunt weapons. Early game any of those are good. Just keep in mind due to the iron crisis, normal weapons will break during battle. Cannot determine when. So best bet is to find a magic weapon asap. They will not break. Till you get one carry a spare. Non iron weapons will not break.

As for armor depends on your play. As a cheapskate I'll buy a studded leather. With max Dex it'll do fine. After netting some loot to sell then mebbe a splint mail/plate mail. Helmets are easy to get. Usually some random hobgoblins encounter will drop it. Also don't forget to buy healing potions. The temple of Oghma in CK sells some. However due to average rep it can be expensive. There is a priest in one of the houses who will give 1 for free. Just say yes when he offers. Yeah buy some arrows too for Imoen. Good luck.
If it matters, I put my proficiency points in war hammers and two-weapon style.

Thanks for the thorough reply. Should I be concerned about saving any gold or just burn it all out the gate?
At the start just buy all you need . I did. at L 1 it is kinda hard. Gold will be available as you progress in the game. Your hoard will grow. Some NPC offer bounties for specific items such as winter wolf pelts. This is without restrictions. Some will buy ankheg shells indefinitely. Wyvern heads. Side quests galore with either gold or stuff which can be sold. Caves/certain locations will have high level encounters with magical weapons/armors/exquisite loot.

If you intend to carry over your MC to BG2 then focus your pips on Warhammer & Flail.
i hope you will enjoy the game.
Buy some extra arrows for Imoen at least 60 to 80 for the trip to the Friendly Arm Inn.
Splint mail, you should have found a warhammer in a box in the room where you fought Shank or Carbos. Maybe a shield. A sling and some bullets could also help. As a cleric you don't need to buy healing potions, just memorize a few Cure Light Wounds. Pretty much anything you're fighting the first couple of levels will die in one hit, so memorize one Bless and the rest CLW.

You want to take care of Bassilus (two maps south of where you start out when you meet Imoen) for a +2 Warhammer named Ashideena ASAP. With the right conversation choices, his army will die and you'll only have to fight him. Apart from that, once you get to Nashkel, there's a suit of Ankheg Platemail hidden in a field in the south west corner of the map that's second best armor in the game for you.

While normal weapons will break, until you complete a certain quest, wooden ones will not. So bows, clubs and staves are safe.

Is this something I can do once I have already left Candlekeep?

Yeah, hit 'p' to bring up your Cleric spells before you rest and you can adjust the spells you memorize. After you rest, you can cast them. The only other level 1 spell you should consider is Command. It can be useful later on but I don't find a 6 second sleep spell very useful at low levels. It could be useful to give your party one round of free hits against Bassilus and the Ogre one map South of the Friendly Arm Inn.

Nothing a Fighter/Cleric wants in Candlekeep can't be bought elsewhere. The first major hub you'll encounter is Beregost, which is one map South and one map East of where you begin your adventure after you finish the prologue. You can find most of what you need either in Feldepost's Inn, Thunderhammer Smithy, High Hedge (one map west of Beregost) or the Temple one map East of Beregost. The Friendly Arm Inn, Nashkel and the Nashkel Carnival also have merchants.

For the sake of completeness, there's also Erdane, outside Durlag's Tower (three maps East of Beregost). It's a dangerous area, but Erdane is at the entrance, so you don't have to fight anything tough. He's a bit expensive, but he has a fair selection of magical ammunition. There's also Ulgoth's Beard in the North East corner of the world map. The bartender there has some very expensive, but useful items.
Studded armor is enough for now, so get one for yourself, and you'll find helmets aplenty pretty quickly.

If you are going to specialize in a metal weapon, get an extra one in case one breaks. Iron weapons can break until you find out why.

Wooden weapons don't break. A cleric with a quarterstaff and a sling has no worries.

Katanas and the other ninja stuff doesn't break, either.

Shield -- If you're using a 1H, might as well. They are cheap. And Imoen might like a nice buckler.

Health potions -- You should be able to find a couple or three around Candlekeep. I never buy them here. Save your cash because by the time you get to Friendly Arms, you will have several magic things you will want identified at the temple, and that takes cash.

Arrow/bolts/bullets for you (I get 12 bundles) and arrows for Imoen (also 12 bundles). You can give 20 to Montaron, too. (There's a shortbow on the ground somewhere he can use if he has arrows.)

You'll find leather armor on the ground for Imoen once she joins you, and you can then have her trade up and steal Montaron's studded leather.

And since we are trading up with Montaron, keep one of those daggers we found and trade it for Montaron's short sword, then give the short sword to Imoen.

Sometimes I buy a sling and 20 bullets for Xzar just so he has some ranged capability. (Montaron and Xzar are going bye-bye right after we get to Friendly Arms. Be sure to steal their potions and spells.)

And that's all I can think of right now.
