Unlike Baldur's Gate 2, BG1's map had to be explored. When you first enter a new area, you should gather your party to each of the 4 edges and attempt to travel. This will enable the next new area in that direction. Sometimes you will not be allowed to travel from one of the map's edges, this is usually because you are at the edge of the game's world, or you are not allowed to enable the next area in that direction. For example, North of the area you mentioned is Cloakwood, which restricted until Chapter 4. There are mods for the base game that enable it earlier, but BG:EE stayed to the base game.
Travel east and from the following area travel north.
AR2600 (Candlekeep) -> AR2700 (Crossroads, Gorion's items) -> east -> AR2800 (south of Friendly Arm Inn) -> north -> AR2300 (Friendly Arm Inn)
Leaving an area at its North/South/West/East border, each exit may unlock a different area on the world map.
Btw, in the enhanced edition, the area transition directions have changed a bit compared with the ancient original game. In case you follow an old walkthrough, keep that in mind.
I mean, what exactly do you hope for? On the world overview map, when you spot the next area south of FAI, why would you want to skip it and not travel through it? I don't get it. Fast-travelling becomes available on the overview map as soon as you've visited an area before.
Btw, explorers can also leave crossroads south and unlock High Hedge (AR3200). That's due to the semi-open world implementation of this first BG game.
