Will NPCs who died in BG1 return in SoD?
Hi, I'm pretty much brand new to the EE's and have never played beyond the intro in SoD; I know some NPCs like Minsc, Dynaheir, Edwin etc will return in SoD and some will not (or if they do, it's a mere cameo and not a returning party member). I'm wondering if you kill an NPC in BG1, will they show up in SoD or will the game treat them as missing or deceased?

I'm about to start a new playthrough as a LE Blackguard and intend to take Kagain, Montaron, Edwin, Baeloth and Viconia with me. I also intend to kill both Minsc and Dynaheir at some point. Will they still show up in SoD if I do this? I don't want to hamstring myself too badly as I understand there's a smaller pool of recruitable NPCs in Siege and would rather not limit myself *too* much.

Thanks in advance.

Um, I don't think they do, although I have not gotten far enough into SoD to confirm that. However, I think you have another problem. I do know that SoD begins by all your NPCs leaving and making you re-recruit them as you go along. Edwin, Baeloth, and Viconia will be available, and fairly early as well. To my sorrow (I like Evil parties too), you cannot keep Kagain or Montaron. Gone for good. (Pun intended!)

And a word of warning as well: The characters who return come back with exactly the levels and abilities they had when you last saw them. For those three, it will be high is they are with you when you defeat Sarevok. But if you had other NPCs briefly that you dismissed, like Safana (thieves are in short supply in SoD), they will be at whatever low-level you left them.

Yikes. I usually take Khalid and Jaheira along with Xzar and Montaron as placeholders early on until I find my permanent party members. This may end up backfiring spectacularly... I really appreciate the heads up.
I've killed Edwin numerous times before and he returns in SOD. So I imagine Minsc and Dynaheir will as well. The crew you had when you fought Sarevok will accompany you against Korlasz at the start of SOD. But as Centurion mentioned everyone will split up when that part is completed.

Also IIRC, everyone retains the gear they are equipped with when you finish with Korlasz. Gear in their backpack slots does go to your personal chest in the ducal palace along with any containers they have. But if they are wearing/using anything you want to keep (armor/weapons/rings/etc) be sure to "unequip" it and put it in a back pack slot before you tell Imoen you are ready to leave. Otherwise you'll lose it.

The characters that do transition to SOD will still have their stuff when you recruit them so you don't have worry about stripping them. I might be missing one or two but I believe the following are the ones that make it into SOD:
Minsc/Dynaheir
Safana
Viconia
Edwin
Rasaad
Baeloth
Jaheira/Khalid
Neera
Dorn

Not much of choice I admit. A few others make an appearance, but aren't available to recruit. Imoen/Coran/Garrick/Tiax/Skie.

Thanks for the reminder. It is unequip, not lose everything. I would add, though, make sure you fully unload those non-returning NPCs. Don't want Kagain running off with your Gauntlets of Dexterity!
I did forget to mention that Jaheira and Khalid are no longer a mandatory "pair". You can recruit them separately in SOD.
If you have Imoen in your party, her gear will be in the chest in the other bedroom when you start SoD. You can't recruit her as mentioned, but you can get her gear. Note that if you don't, the gear left is gone as it not moved to your other chest that will be in the camp.

One time Jaheira got killed by that ghoul turning death spell Aecletec does. She came back in SoD but her skin was all red... it looked pretty funny.
Appreciate the helpful info from everyone, it's all very good to know and could have been painful to learn firsthand the hard way. Also...

That's awesome.
Hmm Been awhile sence ive imported/exported a save into BG2. Do dead characters like Jahiera still show up in BG2 reguardless of how you treated them or if they exploded?

That I can help with. Yeah, they'll still show up if you killed them in BG1 - in BG2 there's usually a throw away line when you first meet certain returning NPCs ("Didn't I kill you?" kind of thing) in case you did. The game won't penalize you in any case and they are essentially reborn.
